SRH vs RCB: “Hoping That Players Correct Their Mistakes Next Season And Emerge Much Better Cricketers” – Brian Lara After SRH’s Dreadful Campaign In IPL 2023

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Brian Lara opened up about the team’s poor campaign in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. He said that hopefully players will correct their mistakes next season and come out good.

Sunrisers Hyderabad became the second team to get eliminated from the IPL 2023. They had a horrendous campaign as they failed to get going with both bat and ball and suffered some humiliating losses in the tournament.

Despite having a star-studded lineup, SRH couldn’t capitalize on the crunch situations. They managed just 4 wins this season and suffered 8 losses in the 12 games. They were one of the favorites to qualify for the playoffs ahead of the tournament but their poor performances with both bat and ball saw them receiving a lot of flak.

Brian Lara admitted he was not able to come to “grips” of the tournament in his first year as Sunrisers Hyderabad’s head coach. He also said that they had a decent batting lineup on the paper but as a unit, they failed to match up that. Speaking at the post-match press conference after their 34-run loss to GT, he said:

IPL 2023 | India National Cricket Team | Chennai Super Kings (CSK) | Delhi Capitals (DC) | Gujarat Titans (GT) | Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) | Lucknow Supergiants (LSG) | Mumbai Indians (MI) | Punjab Kings (PBKS) | Rajasthan Royals (RR) | Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) | SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH)

“First of all, it’s my first year (as head coach of an IPL side). Not getting to grips with the emotions of going through an IPL season, especially when we were back to travelling to different venues and finding out different surfaces Our last year was based on 3-4 venues (due to Covid-19 and bio-bubble environment), so there is a huge difference in that As a coach, an appreciation of how much you have to pay attention to what’s going on is a meticulous task to get things right continuously. Hoping that the players correct their “mistakes” next season and emerge “much better cricketers.

“The likes of Rahul Tripathi or Abhishek Sharma, who scored runs last year in excess of 400 (each) find themselves struggling a bit this year. But it’s not just one or two players, it’s not just the Indian players. I feel that, as a unit, we were unable to match up to what was expected. If you look on paper I would think that this is a respectable batting lineup and we just weren’t able to come to the party enough times.”

SRH vs RCB: “You have to just look at the form of the player,” Brian Lara on not giving enough opportunities to Umran Malik

Umran Malik didn’t get the kind of backing he deserved in the IPL this year. He was dropped from the team after a few poor performances and SRH faced a lot of criticism for not playing him. In the seven games that he has played thus far in the tournament, he has taken just 5 wickets at an economy rate of 10.35 and it seems that he won’t get the opportunity in the last game as well.

Brian Lara said that they have great expectations from Umran Malik but he wasn’t in great form and that’s why they didn’t play him. He elaborated:

“You have to just look at the form of the player. We have great expectations of Umran (Malik). He’s got Dale Steyn to work with. But we have to play each game to win. We’ve got to put our best XI out on the field. So, I think, it’s strictly on the fact that the form of the player is something that we look at before picking the team. We’ve got 25 players (in the squad to choose from).”

Sunrisers Hyderabad will be next seen in action when they will take on Royal Challengers Bangalore in their second-last game of the season on Thursday (18th May).
