Asia Cup 2023: Asian Cricket Council Not Planning To Postpone The Tournament – Reports

Contrary to media reports suggesting that the Asia Cup tournament could be postponed and a parallel event, excluding Pakistan, could be held in Dubai, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) sources have denied sending any such proposal to member nations, reported PTI. The ACC is responsible for organizing the tournament.

According to reports in Pakistan media, if the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) does not agree to host the Asia Cup at a neutral venue, the tournament may be taken away from the country. The PCB currently holds the hosting rights for the 2023 Asia Cup, which is scheduled to be held in the ODI format.

However, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, who is also the chairman of the ACC, has made it clear that the Indian cricket team will not travel to Pakistan. The BCCI has proposed a ‘hybrid model’ for hosting the Asia Cup, where Pakistan would play their matches on home soil, while India would play at a neutral venue, most likely in Dubai.

It remains to be seen whether the ACC and member nations will agree to the proposed ‘hybrid model’ or if an alternative solution will be found. As of now, the ACC has not made any official announcement regarding the postponement or relocation of the Asia Cup.

The Situation Regarding Asia Cup Is Still Very Fluid: Sources

According to reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is believed to be pushing for the entire Asia Cup tournament to be moved to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The UAE has three cricket grounds located in Dubai, Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi, and has previously hosted the tournament in 2018 and 2022 when India and Sri Lanka were the hosts.

A member of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Board, who was present during discussions at an International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting in Dubai, shared information on the condition of anonymity with PTI.

“There has been exchange of messages but no discussion or proposal to postpone the Asia Cup has been floated. Secondly, if the Asia Cup is cancelled, PCB will be intimated first. Nothing of that sort has happened till now. The ACC chairman (Shah) hasn’t yet put anything on record.”

“To postpone or cancel the event, the ACC will have to call an Executive Board meeting. The chairman (Shah) can call the meeting in seven days (virtual or physical). To date, there is no intimation about any such meeting. But, obviously, it is difficult for India to travel to Pakistan in the current sensitive political environmen.”

“Look, if Asia Cup is cancelled after the ACC chairman summons an Executive Board meeting, the ramifications will not just be Pakistan’s World Cup participation but also PCB’s FTP calendar and bilateral relations with Sri Lanka, Afghanistan or Bangladesh. The situation is still very fluid.”

The BCCI’s proposal comes after the board made it clear that the Indian cricket team will not travel to Pakistan for the tournament due to political tensions between the two countries.
