Ex-Australia cricketer Brett Lee opines that Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) should experiment by giving the new ball to pacer Umran Malik and letting him bowl a couple of overs in the powerplay.
In SRH’s most recent defeat to Delhi Capitals (DC), Malik came in to bowl only two overs in the middle overs. In fact, he has only bowled 16 overs in 6 appearances this season so far, suggesting that captain Aiden Markram does not have full confidence in his fastest bowler.

The former Aussie fast-bowler believes that Umran Malik is not being used correctly by SRH, that he can prove lethal if used right.

During his most recent appearance at Jio Cinema’s IPL coverage, Brett Lee said that Sunrisers’ powerplay strategy makes no sense.

“At the moment, SRH are using other bowlers early and using someone like Umran Malik in an over in the 8th or 9th over. So generally the batsmen are settled with 70/0 or 80/0 on the board and when Umran Malik bowling with an old ball with the batsmen set.
“give him a couple of matches with the new ball and if he missed there then he misses out. I am promising you that if gets the confidence of the skipper then there is a good chance that he would succeed because he is bowling with the new ball,” he said.

SRH should show more confidence in Umran Malik, says Brett Lee
In the same discussion about Umran Malik, Brett Lee suggested that Sunrisers Hyderabad should show more confidence in the Jammu & Kashmir bowler.
As stated above, Umran has bowled only 16 overs in 6 matches he has played in IPL 2023. That is 16 out of a possible 24. He was also dropped for the match against Mumbai Indians (MI). He is also bowling most of his overs in the middle overs
Brett Lee has said that SRH should show more faith in the 23-year-old.
“You need to have faith and you need to have a commitment in these guys coming through. I would always give the fast bowler in IPL a brand new ball and give him the correct field, giving him the confidence to run and bowl the old ball,” he said.

SRH are currently ninth in the points table, with 2 wins in 7 matches. They would look to turn their fortunes around for the season in their next match, against Delhi Capitals on April 29.
