PBKS vs RCB: Virender Sehwag Recalls His Last IPL Century Against CSK in 2014, Claims He Wanted To Score It For His Son

Former Indian batter Virender Sehwag has recalled his second-and-last IPL century, which he scored against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), while playing for Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), claiming he did it for his son.

Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), the team that is now known as Punjab Kings (PBKS), reached only a single final in their decade-plus history in 2014. Finishing on the top of the league table, they took on CSK in Qualifier 1.

Sehwag, who was in his penultimate IPL season, didn’t have much impact through the league stages of the tournament. But in the Qualifier against Chennai, the old lion roared as he scored a sensational 122-off-58.

In a recent interview with Star Sports, Virender Sehwag revealed how was his son involved with that ton.

“The most memorable moment for me would be that hundred against Chennai. Before that I wasn’t able to score many runs and my son used to tell me, ‘Dad, my friends in school tease me since you don’t score runs.’ I wanted to score runs for my son and then that 122 came and my son was very happy,” he said.

KXIP put up a massive total of 226/6 while batting first thanks to Virender Sehwag’s 100, which CSK were unable to reach, losing the match by 24 runs. Punjab did end up losing the final to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), despite another century, this time by Wridhhiman Saha.

Virender Sehwag always wished to entertain the crowds in IPL

Virender Sehwag was one of the most explosive batsmen of his time. He always looked to strike the ball out of the boundary line. This is something he showcased when, in his first-ever IPL match for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), he hit the first three balls he faced for a four.

During the same interview, he had this to say about the incident:

“I don’t remember (first three balls he faced in IPL) but I am sure they must have been great (smiles). I was there to entertain people and IPL has been an entertaining league. If you look at some other leagues in the world, they are there just for the sake of it. But IPL continues to entertain everyone on and off the field.”

Virender Sehwag has represented Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings in his 8-season IPL career and never won the trophy. In fact, these teams are still trophy-less, 7 seasons after his 2015 retirement from the league.
