The veteran Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane has opened up about England’s Test Captain Ben Stokes role in the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) squad in the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The MS Dhoni-led team will feature in the tournament opener game against the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday, March 31.

The four-time IPL champion English team sold all-rounder Ben Stokes for a whopping Rs 16.25 crore in the mini-auction. Stokes will start the tournament as a specialist batter at the start of the season and will resume his bowling in the later stages of the tournament. The left-handed batter would want to keep him fresh for the upcoming Ashes series at home.

When asked about Ben Stokes’ role in the squad as an all-rounder or as a specialist batter in the tournament opener against the Gujarat Titans, Ajinkya Rahane replied with a cheeky response, saying that MS Dhoni will decide.

“You will see that tomorrow how Mahi bhai uses him. It’s completely in Mahi bhai’s mind. He will use him really well,” Rahane said.

I Have Always Been An Opener – Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane said that he is an opener, but he can bat according to the team’s requirements. The veteran batter said that he is ready to give his best performance whenever he gets the opportunity on the team.

“I have always been an opener. I have always opened the batting in the T20 format, so not much of a difference in my role. Still, whatever the management and captain asks me to do, I am always open to doing it. For me, it’s always about the team, so whenever I get an opportunity I will give my best,” Rahane explained.

The right-handed batter represented the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2022 edition, but he didn’t perform well in the last season. The Kolkata-based fraternity released Rahane before the mini-audition. The Chennai Super Kings bought him for his base price of Rs 50 lakh in the IPL 2023 mini-auction.
