IND vs AUS: We Had To Score 34 In 2 Overs And I Was All Padded Up – Dinesh Karthik Talks About A Nostalgic Memory From Nidahas Trophy

Last year, at the age of 36, Dinesh Karthik, who had been out of contention for some time, made a remarkable comeback not only to the sport but also earned a spot in the T20 World Cup squad.

Despite having made his commentary debut and not having played since the 2019 World Cup, Dinesh Karthik’s impressive performance in the previous year’s IPL earned him a place in the World Cup team. Karthik is considered as one of the most inspiring cricketers of the modern era, but he is most well-known for his outstanding performance in the 2017 tri-series tournament known as the Nidahas Trophy.

In the final match against Bangladesh, Karthik played a remarkable inning lower down the order, which led India to victory in a thrilling comeback. His outstanding performance in the tournament’s final match has become synonymous with the Nidahas Trophy, and even though the competition was not repeated, the mere mention of its name evokes that one unforgettable memory.

Dinesh Karthik Talks About The Nidahas Trophy Finish

During an episode of the RCB Podcast Season 2, Karthik revealed that he has discussed a particular topic more often than he would have liked. He stated that the video of that particular incident has become the most viewed sports video on YouTube, and the 19th over of that video is the second most viewed sports video on the platform. He expressed amazement at how this has come to be.

“The backstory of the game was that we played the Nidahas Trophy in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka had won their first two matches in the league phase. It was a tri-nation tournament where each team had to play each other twice. In the first two games they won and had one foot in the final. It so ended up happening that they ended up losing their last two matches and rather badly to Bangladesh. Then they ended up losing out on a chance to the final.”

“The first half was pretty much decent as the Indian bowlers did a great job. The second half came and they were way ahead of us. They were dominating us and we were struggling. So it came to a stage where there were 2 overs remaining and we needed 34 runs. I was padded up to go. I padded up in the second or the third over, waiting to walk out. I kept on standing up to walk out and Rohit told me, not now. There was a wicket in the 15th over. I was sure that it was my turn to walk out in the center.”

In the penultimate over of Rubel Hossain’s bowling, Dinesh Karthik hit two sixes and two boundaries, which reduced the required run rate to 12 off the last six balls. The next over started with Vijay Shankar struggling to score against Soumya Sarkar’s bowling, but he eventually hit a boundary on the fourth ball.

However, Sarkar managed to dismiss Shankar on the penultimate ball, leaving India with five runs to score off the last ball, with Karthik at the crease. Dinesh Karthik faced the delivery and hit a flat six over cover, securing India’s victory by four wickets. He remained unbeaten on 29 off eight balls.
