IND vs AUS: Ian Healy Reckons Pat Cummins Should Step Down As Captain And Focus On His Fast Bowling

Ian Healy, a former Australian wicketkeeper-batter, believes that Pat Cummins should step down as captain and concentrate on his fast bowling. Healy thinks four to five years as national team captain is a long time and a recipe for burnout.

With Australia’s defeat in the first two Tests against India, both of which were completed in three days, Cummins’ qualifications as captain have been called into question. Their chances of regaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy were eliminated after the defeats. After the second Test, he was forced to go back home to take care of a family member’s illness.

The Australian team has been captained by the 29-year-old for the past 18 months. In November 2021, Pat Cummins was named Test captain, and after Aaron Finch resigned, he was named ODI captain.

Pat Cummins, who had been ranked first among Men’s Test bowlers since February 2019, fell to third with 858 rating points but has a chance to reclaim the top spot if Australia’s current Test series against India features some excellent performances from him.

“I don’t want Pat Cummins to bear the load of so much captaincy”: Ian Healy

Ian Healy discussed how Pat Cummins may find it difficult to manage both the Test and ODI teams while also attending to his family’s needs on SENQ’s “Pat and Heals.” The 119-Test veteran believes that the right-arm speedster should put his attention toward improving as a bowler.

Healy on SEN network’s podcast said, “I don’t want him carrying the burden of so much captaincy for too long. I want him to finish as just a bowler. The captaincy creates burnout and four to five years is a long time as a captain, He’s done a few years (as Test captain) already, and now he’s adding short-form captaincy to his thought processes at a time when he’s dealing with some sort of family illness back home. So yeah, I would like to see him finish his career as a tearaway fast bowler and someone else with the captaincy burden.”

The visitors are trailing India in the four-match series after two successive defeats in Nagpur and Delhi. Much more is expected of him as a pacer whose strike rate of 47.2 and an average of 21.50 with the ball are the greatest of any Aussie to take over 200 wickets.
