Kayaking in and around Auckland

Auckland is the country’s largest city. It is surrounded on both sides by the sea, with two large natural sheltered harbours and a string of islands of the mainland’s East coast.

There are plenty of great opportunities for kayaking. Here is a run down of some of the best.

  4. Mission Bay Watersports – Mission Bay
  5. Fergs Kayaks – Okahu Bay

Orakei

Orakei offers a good place to launch your boat, especially from Okahu beach. There are plenty for following the coastline and many beaches to explore and you can even paddle across to Rangitoto Island if you are adventurous enough.

Long Bay

Long bay is a short drive North of Auckland city, near Torbay. Here there is the eponymous Long Bay and plenty of nice choices to follow the coast and round to Okura River or beyond.

Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island is known for its laidback life style and wineries. There are loads of great places to launch your kayak and you can even visit some of the wineries on your paddle.

Tāwharanui

Tāwharanui Regional Park offers many good places to canoe especially from Anchor Bay if your craft is up to 3m in length and you can carry or trolley it from the main car park. This is good for inflatables, as you can inflate it once you get to the beach.

Kawakawa Bay

Kawakawa Bay in the Tawhitokino Regional Park is another beautiful location for a paddle. There is a safe and secluded stretch of sandy white beach for you to launch from, where there is even a boat ramp for larger craft.

Puhoi River

A good river paddle can be found on the Puhoi River. Head to Puhoi, 35 mins outside of Auckland, for a good place to launch. You can head out to sea at Wenderholm Regional Park, or turn back to your starting point.
