Sunderland Til I Die icon Charlie Methven set to return to football with takeover of new club

Charlie Methven rose to fame thanks to the iconic fly on the wall series 'Sunderland Til I Die' and has agreed a deal to buy Charlton Athletic from Thomas Sandgaard

Sunderland Til I Die Icon Charlie Methven is set to return to football with a takeover of Charlton Athletic.

Football fans will be familiar with the Englishman from his appearance on the dramatic Netflix fly-on-the-wall series covering the Black Cats’ time in the Championship back in 2018.

And Methven, along with his fellow SE7 Partners director Edward Warrick, has now agreed to take over League One side Charlton.

Current Addicks owner Thomas Sandgaard, who took over the Club in September 2020, accepted the bid which will see Charlton have its fourth set of owners in less than four years.

Supporters will now hope Methven, who made a bid to take over Oxford United in 2014, can guide them back into the Championship.

Charlton chief executive Peter Storrie said: "We'll now work with SE7 Partners and the EFL to meet the league requirements, which is a process that can take some time.

"In the meantime, the day-to-day running of the club will not be impacted. Our preparation and recruitment for the 2023-24 season is well under way.

“We have our targets for our men's team and our women's team. Led by Dean Holden and Karen Hills, those plans continue to progress and will not be halted while we await the approval.

"The aim is to put the club in the best position to achieve our targets for next season - a top-six finish for the men's team and further progression for the women's team."

Methven’s time as a Sunderland shareholder and executive made him a famous figure in football thanks to the Netflix documentary.

He and then-Sunderland owner Steward Donald had aimed to use the series to show the club bouncing back from Premier League relegation to gain promotion again.

But the north-east side were instead relegated to League One, with the second series showing their failed push for promotion.

Methven left his role as a director at Sunderland in December 2019.
