Football game looks like it's being played in a 'warzone' as fans let off fireworks

Manchester City have seen plenty of Fireworks in their hunt for the Treble but supporters watching two Mendoza rivals created more than a fiery atmosphere in the top-of-the-table showdown

An Argentinian second-division match drew comparisons to a warzone over the weekend as raucous supporters let off fireworks minutes before the full-time whistle.

Home outfit Independiente Rivadavia welcomed Mendoza city rivals Deportivo Maipu for a crunch top-of-the-table clash at the midway point of the season. It was a fiery affair both on and off the pitch at the Juan Bautista Gargantini Stadium.

Juan Manuel Elordi fired Independiente Rivadavia into the lead on 28 minutes but both sides were reduced to 10 men in the second period. The hosts doubled their advantage through Alex Adrian Arce Barrios' penalty but Marcelo Eggel's response, four minutes from time, made for a nervy ending.

Keen to aid their side to victory, supporters let off bold red and blue fireworks while the match was still ongoing. Leading to a wave of comments from social media. "A second division game in Argentina taking place in the middle of an active warzone," harked one fan on Twitter.

"Imagine going to a fireworks display and getting a football match included," joked a second. "Nothing like the element of 'scorched earth' to bring out the best in both teams...," quipped a third.

"These are the times I laugh when people say will this certain player from South America, 'will he be ready for intensity of the Premier League'," commented a fourth. While a fifth simply stated: "F***ing hell that’s mental."

The fireworks began with a huge rocket from behind the goal of the Deportivo Maipu goalkeeper before a stream of fireworks are blasted into the air from the main stand, lighting up the sky in streaks of red and blue. As Deportivo Maipu launch one last attack, the Rivadavia defence are able to clear the danger before the full-time whistle is met with another round of deafening rockets.

The 2-1 win saw Independiente Rivadavia leapfrogged Deportivo Maipu to the top of Group B, extending their winning streak to five consecutive matches.
