Claudio Reyna Resigns As Austin FC Director With Family Embroiled In USMNT Scandal

Austin FC announced today that Claudio Reyna, a legendary figure in the soccer world, is stepping down from his role as sporting director and transitioning into serving as the team’s technical advisor. The move comes shortly after a USMNT scandal embroiled his family.

The incident centered on Reyna and his wife’s — professional soccer legend Danielle Egan Reyna — complaints about their son Gio’s playing time during the 2022 World Cup, which was just eight group-stage minutes.

An investigation into USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter, a former teammate of Reyna’s, was launched after the Reynas accused Berhalter of physical abuse against his wife in the 90s.

Berhalter's contract with U.S. Soccer expired on Dec. 31, 2022, and it is still unclear whether it will be renewed amid the controversy with the Reyna family.

As for Reyna, Austin FC's statement on his change in position left out any mention of the scandal.

Two other U.S. Soccer executives have also recently stepped down; sporting director Earnie Stewart and national team general manager Brian McBride both said goodbye the same day Reyna's role change was announced, according to the New York Times.
