Barcelona agreed a €65m fee for Raphinha. The Catalans paid a large part of the sum up front but owe some of it in add-ons or instalments.

The Athletic report that Blaugrana were very anxious about not being able to complete the deal financially. At one point, they asked Leeds to legally agree the move this summer but complete it in January, if it turned out that Barca couldn't register the Brazilian.

Leeds refused and Barcelona ended up paying most of the money up front.

But the Premier League side insisted on including a 'penalty clause' in the transfer agreement. The Catalans would have to pay Leeds €10m "if they failed to meet a fixed payment date".
