Uncovering A Blood Feud: Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur

Chelsea vs. Tottenham is not a rivalry. It is one of the rarest and most toxic professional relationships of all time. But was it always like this? Well, we need to dive deep and understand the things that led to such violent clashes and nail-biting footballing moments. Let us dive right in.

The Puzzle Pieces

A rivalry is like a puzzle. Every moment fits in to make a bigger picture. As a result, you need to go back in time and trace every moment that shaped the rivalry. However, it is not the easiest task to do. Going back in time requires precision and technology that we do not have.

Hence, I have taken it upon myself to dive into the depths of history to analyze moments, stats, and accolades that shaped the infamous Chelsea vs. Tottenham Hotspur. But first, you need to have a clear idea about the primary pieces of this puzzle.

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, or Tottenham, is a professional football club based in Tottenham, London. Tottenham primarily competes in the Premier League. The Premier League is the top flight of English Football.

Tottenham was originally founded in 1882. The team’s emblem is a cockerel bird standing atop a football. The team won its first FA Cup in 1991. The club managed to win this title while it was a non-league club. As a result, this makes Tottenham one of the fewest clubs to do so.

Chelsea Football Club

Chelsea Football Club, or Chelsea, is a professional football cup based in Fulham, West London. Like its rival, Chelsea plays in the Premier League. Fans of Chelsea call them the Blues. This is due to their team’s color scheme and crest. Chelsea is one of the only five English clubs that have won all three football accolades in England: the UEFA Europa League, the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, and the UEFA Champions League

Chelsea was originally founded in 1905 by Gus Mears. Mears acquired the ownership rights to the Stamford Bridge and wanted to start his own football team. Mears offered a lease prospect to Fulham FC, but the latter declined. As a result, Gus made the decision to form his own team.

The Age-Old Rivalry

We have the primary puzzle pieces. But the picture is far from complete. I always say that a football rivalry like Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur is like a fine wine. It grows more interesting and flavorful with time. In fact, it has transcended and has turned into a blood feud (in a figurative sense).

As of now, both teams have played 176  games. Each of these games was riddled with some amazing show of skill and performance. However, I have to point out that both teams have been playing since the dawn of the 20th Century. Yet, the rivalry between these teams began in the late 60s.

Background

Here is a fun fact: Chelsea and Tottenham never considered each other primary rivals. However, both teams have been competing in a similar sphere. As a result, it is natural to see some sort of professional rivalry.

Even though both teams never considered each other primary rivals, fans seem to have a different idea about the whole thing. It all started back in 1967 and has gone on to become one of the biggest and most vicious football rivalries of all time. A rivalry that would shape the history of the game.

History Of The Rivalry

Understanding a rivalry is always about understanding the history of the rivalry. A lot of small moments pile up, and a professional relationship becomes a rivalry. Therefore, it is my responsibility to create a homogenous chronology so that fans can understand how and what made Tottenham and Chelsea rivals. With that note, let us dive right in and analyze some of the biggest moments in the Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur. Let’s go!

Early Meetings

Both teams met for the first time on December 18th, 1909. This match was originally played at Stamford Bridge. This was the first time Tottenham was playing against Chelsea. Chelsea won the match with a 2-1 scorecard. This was a historic match as it laid the grounds for years-long rivalry to come.

The teams again met on 30th April 1910. This match was played in White Hart Lane. Spurs took revenge for their former defeat and won the match with a 2-1. The best part about the match was that Percy Humpreys scored the winning goal. Humphrey was a former Chelsea player who recently joined the Spurs clan.

Beginning Of A Feud

Both teams have been competing since the early 1900s. However, the rivalry started back in the 1967 FA Cup final. 100,000 people attended the match, and something shocking happened.  This match is often called the Cockney Cup Final

Chelsea and Tottenham had a good run in 67. However, Tottenham won the derby with a 2-1 score. This immediately sent fans into a frenzy. Chelsea fans were not at all happy with the outcome. As a result, a deep rivalry began between the two teams.

1990-2015

The 25-year period between 1990 and 2015 was one of the glorious moments for both teams. Each team was trying to one-up the other in matches. This was a period of bombarding goals and nail-biting rivalry.

The 90s was Chelsea’s era. Chelsea remained a dominant force during their meetup with Hotspurs during the 90s. Both teams met several times during the decade, and the Blues were always on the winning side.

One prominent moment of this time was the hint of violence in the clash of two teams. Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur matches would often end with violent mob clashes between the fans of the two teams.

Battle Of The Stamford Bridge

2nd May 2016 was an infamous day for the fans of Chelsea and Tottenham. Both teams desperately needed a win. However, they failed to leave any tangible mark the whole season. As a result, this match was everything for both teams.

Due to the stakes, this was an ill-tempered match. Later on, this match would be known as the Battle of Stamford Bridge. The match was so vicious that players engaged in an outright clash. This resulted in nine yellow cards for the Tottenham side and three for the Chelsea. Subsequently, both teams had to face charges from the FA for failing to control their players.

This was one of the most violent and terrible Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur clashes of all time.
