If you have been following American football for a while, I am pretty sure that you might have heard about the Samoan beast named Jordan Ta’amu.  Ta’amu is a free agent like Kyle Sloter. As a result, Ta’amu has played for several renowned teams like Tampa Bay Bandits, DC Defenders, etc.  

Like several other players, Ta’amu started his American Football Career at a fairly young age. He started playing football in the school and never really stopped. So, today, let us look at the story behind the name Jordan Ta’amu.  

Early Life

Jordan Ta’amu was born on December 10th, 1997, to a traditional Samoan parents. Jordan was born in Pearl City, Hawaii, and went to Pearl City High School. Ta’amu demonstrated an eager knack for football from a very young age. As a senior, he graduated from Pearl City High School with 1,779 yards and 29 touchdowns against 4 interceptions.  

Later on, he went to college at the New Mexico Military Institute. There, he managed to complete 3,014 yards with 32 touchdowns. However, for reasons unknown, Ta’amu was transferred to Ole Miss in 2017.  

Ta’amu joined the Ole Miss as a backup for their star QB, Shea Patterson. However, he quickly moved up in the roster due to Patterson’s injury and started the final five games of the season for the Ole Miss team. He finished the respective season with 11 touchdowns, 4 interceptions, and 1,682 passing yards.  

In the following season, after Patterson’s transfer to the University of Michigan, Jordan Ta’amu entered as the starting quarterback.  Ta’amu ended the respective season with 3,918 yards, 8 interceptions, and 19 touchdowns. As a result, he was ranked second in the SEC passing yards, following Tua Tagovaliloa of Alabama. This greatly helped his career as it gave him a whole new direction.   

Career Highlights

Jordan Ta’amu tried his hands at professional Football after his highly talked about career in college football. As a result, he managed to create waves as a QB. Since Jordan has mostly played as a free agent, he managed to play in several teams. In this section, we will look at his stints with various teams. This will enable us to have a virtual timeline of Jordan Ta’amu’s career.  

Houston Texans 

Jordan Ta’amu started his professional football career with the Houston Texans. Ta’amu joined the Texan Roster on August 7, 2019. However, for some reason, the stint only lasted for a few days. As a result, he did not get a chance to prove his worth with the Texan squad. However, this opened a floodgates for future enterprise and career in American Football. Hence, this was a very important chapter in Jordan Ta’amu’s career.  

St. Louis BattleHawks 

After Ta’amu’s brief stint with the Texans was done, Ta’amu reallocated to the XFL team, St. Louis BattleHawks. Ta’amu was one of the first players signed by the team in the 2019 season.  In the 2019 XFL season, Ta’amu was the only quarterback who lacked professional experience. Still, he was given the starting position in the team. Later, in an interview, Ta’amu said that the responsibility was much bigger than he could have anticipated as a first-time professional player.  

Soon enough, Ta’amu proved that he was the right choice as a starting quarterback. In the debut game of the season, Ta’amu managed to secure 209 yards and a passing touchdown. His efforts helped the team to secure a 15-9 victory against the Renegades.  

As Ta’amu was warming up, his contract was suddenly terminated as the league was suspended. But this also helped him to get his shot to play with the big boys.   

Kansas City Chiefs 

As his contract with BattleHawks was terminated, Jordan Ta’amu somehow made his way to the Kansas City camp. While Ta’amu was very excited to play in the NFL, fate had other plans. Ta’amu’s time with the Chiefs was plagued with uncertainty and dismissal. While things were certainly frustrating, he  

Jordan Ta’amu joined the Chiefs on April 2, 2020. However, Ta’amu tested positive for COVID-19 on October 3rd, 2020. As a result, he was placed on the practice or COVID-19 reserve list. This lasted for another few days, and he was finally waived on October 27th, 2020.  

Detroit Lions 

After Ta’amu left the Kansas City Chiefs after a disappointing run, he made his way to the Detroit Lions. Jordan Ta’amu was signed to the Detroit Lions practice squad. He was signed along with David Bough and Tim Boyle. When Ta’amu was brought into the team, head coach David Campbell had some really nice things to say about Ta’amu. 

Campbell was very impressed with Ta’amu’s performance with the Ole Miss team. He singlehandedly managed to complete 30 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, and 10 rushing touchdowns. Subsequently, his overall completion rate was around 64.5%. As a result, Campbell was optimistic about his inclusion. However, this was again a small stint that only lasted for about a month. After about a month, Ta’amu was again waived off to the Kansas City Chiefs for his second stint.  

Kansas City Chiefs (second stint) 

Unlike the first stint with the Kansas City Chiefs, the second stint was a little more productive. Jordan Ta’amu joined up with the Chiefs on 12th January 2021 as a reserve or future contract and was let go on May 10, 2021. 

Even though Ta’amu has agreed that his stints with Kansas City Cheifs were brief and sub-par, he agreed that he was welcomed with an open arm. In an interview, Ta’amu revealed that tight end Jonathan Hayes reached out to him and said, “The Chiefs are going to take care of you.” Hayes further added, “They are a great business, a great team, great coaching staff, and my love for them is over the roof. I’m going to make sure that they take care of you too.” 

Such a statement coming from a legendary player like Hayes really rocked Ta’amu’s whole world. In the same interview, Ta’amu said that the words comforted him and left him with more confidence. Soon enough, Ta’amu joined the Chief squad with the likes of Patrick Mahomes and Chad Henne. As a result, this really worked out well for Jordan Ta’amu and his future endeavors.  

Detroit Lions (second stint) 

Almost in a Deja Vu manner, Jordan Ta’amu again signed up with the Detroit Lions on August 17, 2021. But this was by far the shortest stint of the Ta’amu’s career. In this run, Ta’amu was only employed by the Detroit Lions for just six days. He was let go on August 23, 2021.  

However, this is not the shortest employment stint in NFL history. Back in 2000, Bill Belichick was elevated to the position of head coach for about a day. In a press conference that was slated to be Belichick’s introductory press conference, Bill decided to put in his resignation. This rocked the US football world to the very core. Later on, Bill went to the New England Patriots and helped them win six Super Bowls.  

Given the duration of Ta’amu’s stint with the Detroit Lions, it is understandable why he did not get a chance to prove his worth. Still, Ta’amu has always maintained that each of his employment has helped him learn more about the business.  But this was not the only short stint of his career. In fact, this pattern can be seen in his next two appointments as well.  

Washington Football Team 

After getting released from the Detroit Lions on August 23, 2021, Ta’amu took a hiatus from football for around three months. Three months later, he joined the practice squad of the Washington Football Team on December 15, 2021. However, he was again released just after eight days of employment.  

Ta’amu was hired as a backup for starting quarterback Taylor Heinicke. Heinecke and Ta’amu had a history, as Taylor was his backup in XFL. There is no credible information that could tie Heinicke to Ta’amu’s dismissal. However, unconfirmed sources suggest that Ta’amu was not being able to perform up to the mark. As a result, he was dismissed from the team.  

Carolina Panthers 

After Ta’amu’s short stint with the Washington Football Team was over, Ta’amu went to work with the Carolina Panthers on December 30th, 2021. Like a clockwork, this stint also lasted for just 5 days. Ta’amu was released on 4 January 2022.  

Again, no official statements were released for Ta’amu’s early dismissal from the team. As of now, the official statement is that he failed to make a mark in the 53-man roster due to fitness issues. This could be because of his on-and-off status with the game. By 2022, Ta’amu spent a considerable amount of time in different NFL teams. However, he still did not get a chance to prove his worth in the regular season of the NFL.

Even though Jordan Ta’amu did not get much opportunity to play in the NFL, he still managed to be one of the richest American footballers of recent times. This is primarily because of his free agent status that allowed him to change ships as and when needed.

In 2018, Ta’amu confirmed this via a tweet, saying, “Due to genetical technicalities I’m changing my name from the Flyin Hawaiian to the Throwin Samoan – Ready to Lock the Vaught 2018 – #DontBlink or you might miss.” This confirms that Ta’amu is actually of Samoan descent and not a native Hawaiian.  

He Has A Back-Up Plan 

Apart from being a talented superstar, he is also known for his impeccable business sense. As a result, he already has a backup plan in the works. Back in Ole Miss, Jordan majored in criminal justice. As a result, he has officially gone on record, claiming that he will use his degree if his football career fails to pan out.
