Rose Festival Day 1: Weapons exhibition, folk dance competition draw crowds

Celebrating Amrit Mahotsav of Independence, the 51st three-day Rose Festival saw the display of latest weapons being used by ITBP. The Chief Guest of the festival Banwarilal Purohit, Administrator of Chandigarh (Union Territory) declared the festival open.

In the Rose Festival lasting three days, under the guidance of Ishwar Singh Duhan, Inspector General BTC, ITBP, Bhanu, various types of weapons were displayed like rifles, LMG, karion, pistol, light machine gun, mortar machine gun, rocket.

In addition to the exhibition of the launcher, people were given information about disaster management equipment and mountaineering equipment, as well as information about the recruitment process for the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force, Army and various other forces. The exhibition was highly appreciated by the local public.

Rose Festival declared open 

Declaring the Rose festival 2023 open, Governor, Punjab and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh, Banwarilal Purohit said that people from all walks of life can enjoy the natural bounty along with the varied arrangements of flowers and cultural events catering to all age groups.

He appreciated the light and sound show organized by the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation for the first time. He paid rich tributes to Dr M S Randhawa who had conceptualized the Chandigarh Rose Festival and the third President of India, Dr. Zakir Hussain, after whom this rose garden has been named. He said both of them were keen horticulturists.

MP Kirron Kher great satisfaction to see the tremendous interest and enthusiasm shown by different sections of society through their active participation in the Rose Festival.

Cultural extravaganza 

Artists from various parts of country performed on the main stage and in the ground throughout the day followed by Rajasthani dance, bean jogi, himachali nati, ghoomar, bhavai followed by a cultural evening which included the performance of duplicate artists from Mumbai Anil kapoor, Shah Rukh Khan and Mallika Sherawat and then finally the Light and Sound Show for the citizens of Chandigarh and other visitors at the Rose Garden.

What to look forward to at the Rose Festival ?

831 varieties of roses in the garden and different hues decorating the landscape, breathtaking floral displays, innovative new designs and exotic exhibits are the high points of this flower show.

The Corporation has given space for the food court, which was the utmost requirement of the general public and visitors to the Rose Festival as to serve them water and food at the garden itself. Proper arrangements of sanitation have been made.  Display stalls to showcase the talent of beneficiaries of different schemes of DAY-NULM component, exhibits have been arranged for various Self Help Groups this time.

Rose Prince & Princess, Mr Rose & Miss Rose and Rose King and Rose Queen for senior citizens are being held.

The MCC has arranged this festival as zero waste event and displayed all the varieties of roses through LED screens inside the park. Keeping in view the mass awareness, the MCC has showcased various displays of Swachh Bharat Mission besides launching Swachhata Ke Puzzles — small jigsaw puzzles pictures on various themes, like segregation of waste, four type of wastes, no littering in public place and say no to plastic products.

The Chief Guest inaugurated the selfie booth and Swachhata Stall at the Garden, where display of various schemes under Swachh Survekshan-2023 has been arranged including segregation of waste at source level, say No to plastic and onsite composting from kitchen waste etc.
