Arsenal might have ran Sheffield United ragged in Bramall Lane, resulting in a 6-0 trouncing, but it came at a great cost, with elite winger, Gabriel Martinelli, suffering a foot injury. When Arsenal hosted Brentford, Mikel Arteta shared an update on Martinelli’s injury,
“Gabi [Martinelli] hasn’t made it. He’s not in the squad. Unfortunately he got a cut on his foot and we’ll try to get him back…with Gabi it’s never too serious because you know how he is.”
It is believed that Martinelli suffered a deep laceration on his foot, which also led to a bone bruise, expectedly to heal within two to three weeks. This essentially means that Martinelli will be a major doubt for the crunch clash with FC Porto, and will be expected to stay at the club for medical treatment, rather than represent Brazil on international duty, and Arsenal will be sweating on his fitness, with an all-important match against Manchester City on the horizon.
Martinelli has seen an upsurge in his form, with six goal involvements in his last seven games for the club, which was the same number he managed in his last 24. He scored and assisted against Sheffield United, assisted against Newcastle, scored a rather fictitious goal in the monumental win over Liverpool and came off the bench to score twice against Crystal Palace. The warm weather training at Dubai did wonders to him and his teammates.
In his stead, Arsenal deployed Leandro Trossard on the left and in all honesty, he didn’t light up any fireworks against Brentford. With Gabriel Jesus not fully fit, I see Trossard retaining his place on the left against FC Porto, and I hope he puts up a better performance on the night, because we know he’s capable of such.
Martinelli will certainly be cheering his teammates from the sidelines and I hope we have a magical night of European football tomorrow.
