Graham Potter got Four things right as Chelsea beat Wolves to extend unbeaten run

Chelsea continued Graham Potter‘s unbeaten streak by defeating Wolves 3-0 at Stamford Bridge on an easy afternoon in the Premier League.

🔵 | Chelsea are unbeaten in their last ten league games against Wolves at Stamford Bridge [W6, D4].

In the first half, the Blues were on the verge of winning, and it wasn’t until late in the game that Kai Havertz gave Chelsea the lead when Wolves’ defense cracked.

They continued to play with the same energy in the second half, and after 54 minutes, Christian Pulisic scored with a clever finish following a stunning counterattack.

In order to cap off an outstanding performance, Armando Broja scored his first-ever Chelsea goal off the bench. This gave Potter his first two Premier League victories as a Chelsea manager.

A total of seven changes were made to the starting line-up from midweek, as Potter flexed his squad depth against Wolves
A flawless performance was given at the bridge, as we explores what Potter got right.

Handing Gallagher a start

After scoring the game-winning goal against Crystal Palace, Gallagher was given the opportunity to start.

Concerns that the standout loanee from the previous season would revert to bench warming surrounded Gallagher’s playing time this year. However, Potter’s confidence in Gallagher paid off as the England international took charge of the proceedings.

Gallagher terrorized the opposition with his pressure, and the audience enjoyed his relentlessness and work rate all the time.

Fooling Wolves with Azpilicueta

Reece James was expected to start against Wolves, but Potter deceived the public by leaving the England star on the bench. Wolves were completely unprepared when Azpilicueta instead started wide.

The visitors turned off and ignored him, and the Spaniard found himself in acres of space continually. And it wasn’t until they started defending the defender that further gaps started to show.

Because James poses such a threat, it’s likely that a significant portion of Wolves’ training centered on handling the wing-back. However, with James sitting out, Wolves’ team appeared a little disoriented, and Azpilicueta assisted Chelsea in taking full advantage.

Trusting Havertz in attack

It hasn’t been Havertz’s most productive spell, and after scoring against AC Milan, it would have been easy to start Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang instead. Potter, on the other hand, stuck to his guns and kept Havertz in his Premier League lineup, playing him up front.

Havertz came into the game with only one goal on the season, but the German looks like his old self after scoring a brace against England on international duty. On the stroke of halftime, Havertz jumped highest to head Chelsea’s opener, and it was a huge goal at a crucial time.

Counter-attacking football

Potter has already introduced a new level of football intensity, and the devastating counter-attacks that we saw at Brighton have made their way to Stamford Bridge. Brighton became lethal and direct under Potter, and Chelsea’s second goal demonstrates that he is already producing on the practice field.

🗣 Graham Potter after the win: "Credit to Wolves they came out and gave us more of a test in the second half, we saw that period out and we managed to score a nice goal."

👉 on seven changes: "Thiago has had a heavy cold but played against Milan. With two days to recover, that was short so we didn't want to take the chance. Three games for Ben Chilwell wouldn't have been the smartest thing to do."

"Reece had a dead leg yesterday but we wanted to give him a little bit more time.
We were also missing Wesley. Raheem's load was massive so we thought it would be good for him to have a breather, and it was a similar thing with Auba."

👉 on Brighton/Chelsea differences: "More media, more interest in the club. The games are different. We've had two UCL games. The first was surreal - you don't really know the players and you're preparing them for a Champions League game."

👉 on Armando Broja: "I've been here 3 or 4 weeks, so taking no credit, great finish, nice pass too, and whenever he comes on, he works hard for the team. He's had to be patient but he's been working hard in training and it's nice for him to score."

👉 on the team: "I've said from the start I've been impressed with how open, honest and responsible they are. It's difficult to keep the same XI with the schedule but there is an element of consistency to how we play."

👉 on the next match: "We go again on Tuesday. Winning games helps so we look forward to the games, it's about hard work, it's being together, that stuff is important but the guys have been really impressive."
