Over the past 20 years, Chelsea has fired numerous managers, with Todd Boehly continuing the trend started by Roman Abramovich.

Seven games into the Boehly era, and the American owner has already hired a new manager. Thomas Tuchel’s departure came with the loss to Dinamo Zagreb, and Graham Potter, who recently arrived from Brighton, has already taken his place.

Todd Boehly, the owner of Chelsea, fired Thomas Tuchel just one month into the new season, and he now has one of the biggest managerial payments in football history.

In addition to the £13 million paid to former PSG manager Tuchel, Chelsea spent a significant amount of money to match Potter’s release clause.

1. Andre Villas-Boas (£12m)

Villas-Boas was brought to Chelsea from Porto in 2011 at a significant financial cost; the manager had just won the Europa League. After Carlo Ancelotti was fired, he was expected to lead the Blues to success at home and on the continent, but his tenure as manager lasted little over a year.

The club’s ambitions of competing in the Champions League that year were hanging by a thread when the Portuguese coach quit, putting them at risk of finishing outside the top four. However, Abramovich might have felt that his decision to cut the cord was the right one after seeing Roberto di Matteo’s success in Europe.

Thomas Tuchel (£13m)

Tuchel was rumored to be close to signing a new contract to continue leading Chelsea not too long ago. After a rocky start to the season with Boehly acting, though, things swiftly went south.

Chelsea spent the most money in the Premier League over the summer, bolstering their roster with players worth £270 million. The £13 million paid to Tuchel might not seem like a large number in comparison to that.

Jose Mourinho (£18m)

Mourinho was one of the most costly firings and the first hire of the Abramovich era. The former Porto manager won back-to-back championships after succeeding Claudio Ranieri in 2004 but was unable to add a European trophy.

Mourinho was fired barely a few weeks into the new season in 2007 after failing to win three consecutive Premier League titles. At the time, his £18 million payout set a record that lasted for more than ten years.

Antonio Conte (£26.6m)

After winning the championship in his first season, the Italian signed a new contract in 2017, however he left after the 2017–18 season.

“During Antonio’s time at the club, we won our sixth league title and eighth FA Cup,”

a club statement read at the time.
“In the title winning season, the club set a then-record 30 wins in a 38-game Premier League season, as well as a club-record 13 consecutive league victories.”

As it turns out, there is an extremely steep price to be paid for that kind of achievement.
