Toto Wolff Confirms Ferrari Ex-Boss Mattia Binotto Can’t Join Formula One Again, “Too Much Porcelain Broken”

Last week, Mattia Binotto’s 28-year journey with the Scuderia Ferrari ended. Just after the end of the 2022 Formula One season, Mattia resigned from his role and left the Scuderia bossless. The vacancy for the highest position role in the most royal team of Formula One has created chaos in the paddocks. Many proposals come and go, but so far, no one has been chosen as the replacement for Binotto. This action of the Ferrari boss has given topics for discussion to the rivals, including Mercedes boss Toto Wolff.

Meanwhile, Wolff, who always had a paddock battle with Binotto, came out to empathize with him. However, he believes that the Italian Ferrari boss will never join Mercedes because of “too much porcelain broken” between the two. In the Formula One Beyond The Grid podcast, the Mercedes boss admitted that, indeed, he and Mattia shared “our moments” in recent years. But he also admitted that the pair’s relationship has gotten better and “consolidated” through the 2022 season. Toto shared his point of view on why Ferrari had to become a bossless team in 2022.

The reason for Mattia Binotto‘s resignation is “tremendous pressure,” as claimed by Wolff. He explained that despite being rivals, they came to a much better place by this year. However, unfortunately, Mattia had to leave because he was under huge stress in Ferrari. Commenting on the matter, Wolf said, “Being a team principal on Ferrari, one better have a good contract for the exit.”

Binotto’s Expansive CV Cannot Attract Toto Wolff Because of Past Clashes

Nevertheless, for Toto Wolff, it was the right decision and the right time for Mattia to get free from the pressure. He also claimed that the unavoidable happened. But, Binotto held onto it longer than Toto expected. The Italian boss was not just a principal for Ferrari. He joined the team 28 years ago and worked from the ground to the topmost position. In 2016, Binotto was Ferrari’s technical chief; he also overlooked the Scuderia’s engine division. All of the experiences that the Italian holds make the most valuable CV in the entire Formula One paddock. He can apply for any role in other teams.

When Toto Wolff was asked if Mattia’s expansive CV could attract Mercedes to have hired him for other roles, the Austrian boss said, “No! there was too much porcelain broken between us [Toto Wolff and Mattia Binotto] the last two years which makes it impossible.” However, Wolff denied foreseeing his entry into other teams. Toto Wolff for sure said that Mattia understands the inside-out of Formula One. And he will definitely find a role in the paddock soon.

Meanwhile, Ferrari is seeking a personality to send the offer. The team has probably sent their proposal to every deserving figure in the Formula One paddock for the Scuderia’s principal position. Currently, the most likable consideration for the role is Frederic Vasseur, the boss of Alfa Romeo. Let’s see if someone else comes to replace him or if Frederic will become the new Ferrari principal.
