German tennis player Julia Goerges is one of the new breeds of beauties who pose happily in bikinis for the Sports Illustrated swimwear section.

Born on 12th November 1988 in Bad Oldesloe, Schleswig-Holstein she began playing at the age of 6 years old and she is coached by Sascha Ansel. Her inspiration to keep playing was Martina Hingis.

She is currently in her favorite place in the world, Melbourne where she reached the third round of the Australian Open, the tournament she likes best of all. Having won through the first two rounds she had to face Maria Sharapova and she took the best set 6-4 before Sharapova pulled back and won the next two sets 6-4/6-4.

After the match, she said she fought to the end but unfortunately it was the wrong end. She said she thoroughly enjoyed the match and she had great support.

Goerges has improved rapidly over the last five years. She made her debut on the ITF Women’s Circuit in 2005 when she played just 7 tournaments and lost in the first round of 5 of them.

Now she holds 6 ITF titles and 1 WTA Title and as of 10th January 2011, she has her highest ever career ranking of Number 38.

Her first WTA title came at the end of 2010 when she won the WTA Gastein Open beating Timea Bacsinszky in the Final in straight sets.

Before Melbourne, she reached the Semi-Finals of the 2011 ASB Classic in Auckland losing to the eventual champion Greta Arn in three sets.

Her career goal is to get better step by step, and she is well on her way to achieving that goal. Boyfriends have been put on hold while she concentrates on her tennis career.

Julia Goerges is a handy doubles player as well and she is ranked one place higher at 37 for her doubles play as of 27th September 2010. Her wins in 2010 were with different partners but she often plays with American player Jill Craybas.

Like a lot of the modern players, she is a great Twitterer and fans can read her almost daily diary of her exploits as she travels around the world on the WTA Tour.
