Morib Duathlon 2024 Welcomes Young Athletes in New National Youth Championship

Anticipation is building for the Morib Duathlon 2024 as the sun rises over the tranquil Morib Beach. Formerly known as Selangor Duathlon, this year’s event, now in its third edition, is set to introduce an exciting new feature: the National Youth Championship.

Designed to nurture young athletes aged 12 to 15, this initiative aims to foster the next generation of duathletes and ensure the sport’s vibrant future in Malaysia. Supported by the Malaysia Triathlon Association, the Youth Championship underscores the event’s commitment to developing young talent and promoting a healthy lifestyle among the nation’s youth.

Race Director Toto Ong highlights the importance of investing in young athletes, stating, “Our youth are the future of this sport. By providing them with a platform to compete, we are helping to cultivate their skills and passion for duathlon.”

The National Youth Championship will see these young competitors tackle a sprint distance course, offering them a challenging yet accessible introduction to the sport.

In addition to the Youth Championship, the Morib Duathlon continues to attract a diverse field of participants from across Malaysia and beyond. The event has grown significantly since its inception in early 2022, driven by a post-Movement Control Order (MCO) surge in interest in running and cycling.

“The pandemic sparked a fitness revolution, with many discovering running and cycling as key activities,” says Ong. This increased interest has helped transform the Morib Duathlon into a major competition on the Malaysian sports calendar.

Morib Beach, less than a 90-minute drive from Kuala Lumpur, provides a picturesque and strategic location for the event. The racecourse features scenic running paths along the beach and a flat, fast cycling route, offering participants both a beautiful and challenging experience. “The location is ideal with its natural beauty and accessible course,” Ong explains.

The success of the Morib Duathlon owes much to the unwavering support from Selangor Tourism and Majlis Perbandaran Kuala Langat. “Their support in providing the venue and managing logistics has been invaluable,” notes Ong.

This collaboration highlights a shared vision of promoting local tourism and community engagement through sports. The event not only boosts local businesses by attracting over 1,000 athletes and supporters but also showcases the charm of Morib Beach to a wider audience.

A major highlight of the Morib Duathlon 2024 is the grand prize for the winners of the Olympic individual category: an all-expenses-paid trip to compete in the Titan 77.7 Philippines duathlon.

“This prize gives our champions a taste of international competition, elevating their standards and experiences,” Ong states. The package includes flights, accommodation, and race entry, offering a comprehensive competitive opportunity.

Catering to both elite athletes and amateurs, the Morib Duathlon features various categories to suit different levels of experience and fitness. The Sprint category includes a 5km run, 20km cycle, and 2.5km run, while the Olympic distance involves a 10km run, 40km cycle, and 5km run, available for individuals and mixed relays.

Ong advises participants to maintain a balanced training regimen. “Focus on both running and cycling, and incorporate brick training to simulate race conditions,” he suggests. Past champions recommend achieving a running speed of 4 minutes per kilometer and cycling at 40 kilometers per hour to stay competitive.

This year, the field includes notable athletes from across Southeast Asia, including competitors from Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines. “It’s exciting to see such a diverse range of participants, enhancing the competitive spirit of the event,” Ong mentions.

Participants are also advised to prepare for varied weather conditions. “Adaptability is key, as athletes will face cool, windy mornings and hotter conditions later in the day,” Ong advises. This resilience is crucial for those aiming to top the podium.

Looking ahead, Ong envisions the Morib Duathlon growing into an international event. “Our goal is to elevate the sport and build a vibrant duathlete community,” he reveals. With registration closing on 29 June 2024, aspiring participants should act quickly to secure their spots.

The Morib Duathlon 2024 is set to be a memorable event, blending competitive spirit with the natural beauty of Morib Beach. For more information and to register, visit the official Morib Duathlon’s race registration website.
