63 ways to celebrate Malaysia’s 63rd Merdeka Day

Together We Unite to celebrate Malaysia’s 63rd Merdeka Day, even more than before as the COVID-19 has been trying to keep us apart.

With our forefathers’ great sacrifice in 1957, we are forever grateful for the freedom to pursue multiple sports in our own time.

ToughASIA spoke to the sporting community for 63 ways to swim, bike and/or run to celebrate Merdeka this extended holiday weekend in 2020.

RUNNING

Azlina Ahmad Zabidi:  Celebrating my wedding anniversary too on 31st August. In the morning,  I plan to run and hike at Kepayang Hill and Citipark Seremban 2 in Negeri Sembilan.

Azura bt Yaacob: Running or hiking around 15km.

CG Lim from IRONMAN Malaysia: I will be running the Larian Enam Tiga Virtual Run by Sportsplits with friends.

Azlina will be running and hiking to celebrate her wedding anniversary on Merdeka too.

Chen Kai Hao: Run a time-trial with the Malaysia elite runners at the Panasonic stadium in Shah Alam over 3000m and 5000m. 

Chris Liew from Speediators: I will be celebrating our 63rd Merdeka day by running, without any specific distance or duration (because it’s our Independence Day, hence we should run freely) and of course not to forget to listen or even sing our patriotic songs to mark the Merdeka Day.

Chua Soon Ee: Complete my first 50km ultra run with friends at Route 68, Genting Sempah in Selangor.

Elyne Chin ran 8.31km around the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

Elyne Chin: I will run 8.31km around our iconic National Stadium at Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, donning a red t-shirt as part of our national flag’s colours.

Ewegene Tan from Malaysian Mountain Trail Festival: I will be trail running on the west coast of Tioman island in Johor covering some 35-40km. 

Jamie Pang: 6.3km run in the morning, on Penang island.

Ewegene Tan will be trail running on Tioman island.

Jeff Lau shared some knowledge with juniors at a triathlon camp in Lumut, Perak.

Jeff Lau: The ultrarunner and Deca-triathete shared some of his knowledge and experience with youths at a triathlon camp in Lumut, Perak. 

Jenica Chai: I will be running 6.3km for 3 days straight the whole weekend to celebrate Malaysia’s 63rd year of independence.

Heikal: Do my speed training in the trails and Cycling around Setia Alam, Selangor.

Husband and wife, Jenica Chai and Eric Lim will be running 3 days in a row over Merdeka weekend.

Loh Chooi Fern: Running 6.3km with friends dressed to the Merdeka Day theme with Blue and Red at Kampung Pandan, KL.

Marcus Ong: Running 10km trail in Setia Alam, Selangor.

Olivia Miwil: Usually I’ll run a half marathon on my off day, starting at 4am until I complete the 21.1 km or more at Bukit Padang, Kota Kinabalu in Sabah.

Saddam Pitli ran in a t-shirt designed with Malaysia’s national flag.

Peter Teh: Running, 5km, with a small Malaysia flag/cap around Sungai Buloh, Selangor. 

Saddam Pitli: Running for 63 minutes wearing a t-shirt with a Malaysian design at Putrajaya in Kuala Lumpur. 

Safiah Galgo: Merdeka Day LSD Run along route 68 – Genting Sempah in Pahang. Distance will be 30km, duration 5 hours.

Safiah Galgo pursued a LSD at Genting Sempah on gradual inclines in Pahang.

Soh Wai Ching busted his lungs to outdo his personal best in a 1000m time-trial.

Soh Wai Ching: Asia’s ranked number 1 tower runner busted his lungs in time trial sessions and beat his personal best in 1000m in Shah Alam, Selangor.

Shree Malani: Running 31km around Bukit Mertajam in Penang.

Tan Chin Chin: I will be hiking up to Penang Hill with my sister and brother-in-law via the Heritage trail, 5km, a family activity together.

Tasha Jacky: Joining a 63km run by individuals or a relay team around Kuala Lumpur starting from 10pm till 7am.

Tasha Jacky ran a 63km relay with some friends in Kuala Lumpur.

Ecah (left) just embarked on new adventures on two wheels.

CYCLING

Allison Yee: The SEA Games triathlon finisher will be cycling 300km in the Audax 300, starting from Morib, Selangor.

Dannie Choong: Celebrating by cycling 120km along the idyllic ‘kampung’ route from Putrajaya to Morib, Tanjung Sepat, Bagan Lalang in Selangor, wearing my Malaysia theme cycling jersey.

Ecah from Team Fuerte Chicky: Usually running with Shah Alam Running Club, Ecah has picked up cycling recently. For a newbie, she will be cycling 155km from Morib to Putrajaya in tandem with Merdeka 2020 Virtual Ride.

Dannie Choong took a trip along the coast to fly the flag.

MCO has forced Harum Delima (bottom right) to explore the local scenes down in Johor.

Edmund Tan: Mr. Ice Cream Man from Inside Scoop will be riding all the trails in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur – forward and reverse! I’ll probably do a Kiara epic, break, then ride at the Kota Damansara Community Forest in Selangor.

Grace Goay: Leisure ride, cycling around Penang while enjoying the kampung scene with my hubby.

Harum Delima Haug: Cycled my first 3-digit ride (126km) since Ironman Norway in June 2019. Beautiful route in Kota Tinggi, Johor on this #bikeholiday despite the unforgiving winds, rough road conditions (even broke my rear cage), and endless rolling hills.

Jerry Chow and team EZ Riders on their ambitious ride to Ulu Yam for Merdeka.

Ivan Chung from Bike Science Malaysia: On Sunday, cycle 80km from Putrajaya to Klia. On Merdeka, run 5km around the lake in Klang, Selangor.

Jef Sylvester: Riding mountain bike in the evening, distance aiming for 18km of trails in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur.

Jerry Chow from EZ Riders: Cycling 140km from Bukit Jelutong to Ulu Yam via Rawang, Selangor.

Karen Foong cycled around Penang on mountain bike for a change explore the inner routes.

Karen Foong from Ami3: Mountain biking through Sg Ara – Empress Villa – Carpet – The Glass House – Pondok Upeh – Tun Sardon on Penang Island.

Kelvin Tan: Definitely gonna cycle this 31st August, about 50-60km around KL city or Jenjarum in Selangor. Will fly a small Malaysia flag in my rear jersey pocket while riding.

Lim Chee Yong: Cycling 100km from Puchong to KL International Airport in Selangor with friends.

Lim Ming Chiat cycled around Singapore to explore.

Lim Ming Chiat: Cycling around Singapore to explore and see the landmark sights since this Petaling Jaya-born moved to Singapore.

Loh Sea Keong: This ex-national cyclist now resides in Thailand. He cycled up the Doi Chang mountain in Chang Rai, Thailand to watch the sunrise. 

Maple Chan: We decided to do something different on a long Merdeka weekend by doing a 30km KL city bike tour. It was a 5-hour ride including stopping by for lots of photo taking and multiple stops of eating. Managed to see a different side of KL.

Instead of driving on 4 wheels around KL city, Maple Chan took a ride on 2 wheels instead.

Loh Sea Keong will be soaking up the sunrise on Doi Chang in Chiang Rai, Thailand.

Pedalholics Cycling Club (PCC Malaysia): Ride to Fruit Valley and Batu Arang in Selangor, 98km.

Rasyidi from PCC Malaysia: Plan to ride around Penang Island. Target 80km/4-5 hours including multiple food stops.

Sara Sabri from Roots Asia: Walking a few kilometers around Penang plus tandem cycling while enjoying the great food!

PCC Malaysia rode along the undulating hills of Fruit Valley and Batu Arang in Selangor.

Setia Riders known as Sardines cycled around their neighbourhood in Setia Alam.

Setia Riders – Sardines: Short 22km night ride around the Setia Alam neighbourhood with neighbourhood cyclists.

Shahrom Abdullah: Cycling up Fraser’s Hill with my training group SA Bike Connexion.

Sue Kay: Long ride from Hulu Langat to Titi, Selangor with RC Coaching on Merdeka morning. The ride is about 100km with many climbs, on a very scenic route. Most of us will be wearing RC Cycling Jersey, and we will hand out small Malaysia flags to them to place on their back pockets

Shahrom Abdullah cycled up Fraser Hill with his training buddies.

Zainol Talep cycled across 3 states over 413km from Selangor to Penang.

Teng HN: Cycle 63km off-road and on tarmac at Bukit Ramlee, Selangor.

Winnie Thor: I will be riding this weekend starting with Saturday – 100km countryside loop to Bestari Jaya in Selangor and Sunday – another 100km route from Taman Tun Dr. Ismail in Kuala Lumpur to Genting Sempah, Pahang.

YK Chai: Usually a pacer with the ASICS Running Club, YK just started cycling and attempted cycling Genting Peres at Hulu Langat, Selangor.

Zainol Talep: Cycling across 3 states over 413KM from Bangi, Selangor to Georgetown, Penang in 2 days.

YK Chai is learning to love the roads on two wheels.

Aldrian Yeo is paving the way for youngsters at Team TIME Triathlon.

TRIATHLON – Swim, Bike, Run or DUATHLON – Bike and Run

Aldrian Yeo: This national triathlete and triathlon coach will be taking Team TIME Triathlon for a training camp in Melaka this weekend consisting of 24 athletes and 4 coaches from Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor. The camp will focus on skills development and providing athletes with the knowledge of racing and training.

Amer Hamzah Arshad: Being an indoor training freak, I will ride 2 hours on Zwift, followed by running 11km in Kuala Lumpur. 

Amir Hamzah from Chap Ayam Triathlon: Swim at Port Dickson, then a group bicycle ride to Lukut about 40km with a small national flag hanging on our handle and then run about 5 km. Will celebrate with a BBQ at night too!

Ann Pow cycled 150km from Cyberjaya to Melaka, her home state.

Ann Pow: Cycled 150km, ‘balik kampung’ ride from Cyberjaya to my hometown in Melaka on Saturday. Ran on Sunday.

Andrew Choa: In tandem with Larian Enam Tiga Virtual Run, it is going to be 3 days of run and ride.  Saturday and Sunday – Run & Ride, Monday – Run.

Chris Khoo: I’ll be doing the IRONMAN 70.3 distance so swim 1.9km, Bike 90km, Run 21.1km consecutively around Putrajaya, Selangor.

Andrew Choa will be running and cycling for 3 days consecutively.

Dr. Lynn Azura: As a doctor, I will be on call. In the morning before my rounds, I’ll be doing a short cycle about 15-16km in Hulu Langat, Selangor. In the evening, I’ll do a 6.3km run.

Edwin Thiang from RC Coaching: Long ride to Hulu Langat, Selangor in the morning. At night, I will be coaching swimming for RC Coaching at Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.

Jason Loh: The national triathlete now based in Singapore will cycle 100km around the whole Singapore island with some friends, plus a 1.5 hour long run the next day.

Chris Khoo conducted his own IRONMAN 70.3 distance simulation in Putrajaya.

Leow Wen Jun: On Merdeka Day, I will have my training with M3X Triathlon Club from 730am until 11am. I will lead the group for some warm ups, running drills and have a short run around Putrajaya lake side before the swim and ride.

Lim Yong: Cycling 90km Hulu Langat in Selangor on Saturday and running 5km on Sunday.

Luis Lui: Run 16km and cycle 1 hour indoors at home in Penang.

Yen Chia: Usually a pacer with ASICS Running Club, she’s embarked on cycling recently. She cycled her longest ride on Saturday, 202km from Kota Kemuning, Selangor to Port Dickson in Negeri Sembilan and return. On Merdeka day, she’s planing to run 15km at Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur with friends.

Zee Lim: Swam solo 3.6 km in open waters at Desaru in Johor to mark our 63rd Merdeka Day.

Yen Chia cycled her longest ride to Port Dickson over 202km.

OTHERS

Joseph Lam from ASICS: Played in a badminton competition in Kuala Lumpur.

Prakashkumar Easwvaran: Hiking trans Naning in Negeri Sembilan.
