Daily News Roundup: “Test all players before English season restarts”; Kenny Dalglish diagnosed with coronavirus

Sir Kenny Dalglish has tested positive for coronavirus, though is showing no symptoms of COVID-19

Cian Richardson – 10 April 2020

Sir Kenny Dalglish has tested positive for coronavirus and is now in hospital, despite showing no symptoms of the disease, his family have confirmed.

Liverpool’s legendary striker was admitted to hospital on Wednesday to be treated for an infection that required intravenous antibiotics.

The 69-year-old, who also played for Celtic, was tested for coronavirus as a precaution once he was admitted to hospital.

The former Scotland international’s family said: “Unexpectedly, the test result was positive but he remains asymptomatic.

“He would like to take this opportunity to thank the brilliant NHS staff, whose dedication, bravery and sacrifice should be the focus of the nation’s attention at this extraordinary time.

“Prior to his admission to hospital, Sir Kenny had chosen to voluntarily self-isolate for longer than the advised period together with his family. He would urge everyone to follow the relevant government and expert guidance in the days and weeks ahead.

“He looks forward to being home soon. We will provide further updates as and when it is appropriate.”

“English football should not restart until players tested”

The chief executive of the League Managers’ Association (LMA) Richard Bevan has expressed his opinion that the English football season should only be resumed once all players had been tested for coronavirus.

Bevan did stress though that “tests must be made available first” to NHS workers and their patients.

LMA chief executive Richard Bevan believes testing is the key to getting the season restarted, but admits NHS staff and patients remain the priority

He then added: “Once that’s happened, by all means let’s access it in sport”.

All football in England has been postponed indefinitely, with no exact restart dat confirmed as of yet.

The EFL claimed this week that they believed they could get all EFL games completed within 56 days once football is recommenced.

Bevan, however, has criticized the EFL for not consulting them over this estimation.

Bevan said the proposed schedule was “amazingly tight”, before continuing to say “You’re going to have to get the support of the coaches and managers. You do not do that by not talking to them. You do not get the end-product or working together if you just send a letter out without actually taking their advice or thoughts.”

Bevan also expressed his view that the EFL must now discuss the restarting of their leagues with the managers of the teams across the divisions.

“You’re going to have to get the goodwill of the players because you’re going to have at least three weeks of training to get back on the pitch at least,” he said.

“The most important thing guiding every principle is health, and getting back on the pitch without ensuring fully-fit players is a very big call to make. I would like to see more debate.”

Bevan believes the key to getting the season back underway as soon as possible was through increased testing.

“We’re not really going to see more accurate forecasting about when we can get on the pitch until the end of April.

“In Germany, if you look at discussions about coming back in May, that’s probably a direct result of some very clear thinking from their government because they’re doing 50,000 tests a day.

“In this country we’re doing 10,000 per day, although the government are targeting 100,000 each day by the end of the month.

“Our managers do not want to be back on the pitch unless the players have been tested. But at the same time the government must confirm that is OK, because the tests must be made available first – if there’s a shortage – to care workers, patients, NHS staff and their families.”
