Jorge Masvidal Will Fight This Year If The Pay Is Right

The public dispute between Jorge Masvidal and the UFC concluded with Masvidal missing out on a shot at the welterweight title and the opportunity being passed on to Gilbert Burns instead.

Masvidal has come out and answered some fan questions via Instagram Live that he later uploaded to his official UFC channel. One of the fan questions was asking Masvidal if he plans on fighting this year as he is yet to compete in 2020. Masvidal’s last Fight was back in November at UFC 244 where he beat Nate Diaz to win the BMF title.

Masvidal said he plans on fighting this year but stayed firm in his stance that he won’t be underpaid. As a veteran of the game, Masvidal said he understands the financial aspect of the fight business and has a formula to calculate his worth.

“Yeah, I’m going to fight this year, god willing I’m going to fight this year. What’s not going to happen is I’m not going to be played or underpaid; that’s for sure. I have a value, a formula we’ve come up with for what I’m worth and that comes off 16 years of doing this, of seeing the field in and out. I’m not some rookie. I’m not some guy handed the title for the first time in my life. I’m been in this position before in different organisations and stuff and we know how to calculate what I bring in. I want a fair share of what I bring in.

For those “know it all’s” online that are saying “why would I make more or less on this fight?” It’s not about that, it’s about how much I’m going to receive from the pay-per-view, how much of a share I want from the pay-per-view. That’s one of the main things that I’m fighting about. I don’t feel that cut is fair, and I don’t agree with it.”

17 years into his career we definitely don’t have to question Masvidal’s love for fighting but getting what he’s worth is clearly of high importance to him now. Masvidal was asked whether he wants Conor McGregor to which he simply said he wants money.

“I want a fight that brings money to the table. I don’t give a fuck who the name is.”

With Masvidal sitting on the side-lines waiting for a big payday it’s likely that he will need a big-name dance partner as well. Could a big fight emerge for Masvidal in 2020?
