With the majority of the UFC’s stadium events being cancelled this announcement doesn’t come as too much of a surprise but the promotion has now officially confirmed that the UFC Dublin show is cancelled.
The announcement is also unsurprising as the UFC 252 PPV event with the Stipe Miocic vs. Daniel Cormier rubber match has been scheduled for August 15th and it was highly unlikely that the promotion would run two cards on the same night in the current circumstances.
The official cancellation came via the UFC Europe Twitter account at around 12pm on Wednesday.
“Due to Current Government Restrictions on public gatherings in the Republic of Ireland, #UFCDublin originally scheduled for August 15th will not take place as planned at the 3 Arena.
UFC looks forward to returning with an event in the near future”
The event would have marked the first return to Ireland in nearly five years for the UFC as the last event was held in October 2015 when Louis Smolka defeated hometown fighter Paddy Holohan in a flyweight main event.
The UFC’s statement did not confirm when they would be returning to Dublin but simply stated that they look forward to returning in the near future which suggests the event may be rebooked when possible.
Currently, the Irish government are planning to relax lockdown restrictions at the end of June as more businesses open up but there will still be a gathering limit of 50 people indoors and 200 people outdoors until towards the end of July. Following that the current plan is to increase those limits to 100 people indoors and 500 people outdoors which still means the UFC event would have to be held with no fans.
If the UFC cannot have a live audience, then logistically and financially it makes more sense for the promotion to host events at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas.
