Dana White Confirms That Conor McGregor Is Ready To Return

Shortly before his return to action, Conor Mcgregor was very vocal about wanting to stay active in 2020 and get several fights in this year and it looks like his second fight of the year could be just around the corner.

McGregor returned after a 15-month layoff in January and stopped Donald Cerrone just 40 seconds into the first round improving his overall record to 22-4. McGregor remaining active has been hindered by the COVID-19 pandemic causing most sporting events to be postponed or cancelled.

MMA Fighting reported that UFC President Dana White said in an interview with Jim Rome on Tuesday that McGregor is eager to return to action and it could well be held at the new ‘Fight Island’ to get around any potential travel restrictions.

White also admitted that hosting a fight with his biggest superstar in an arena with no fans isn’t the best scenario for him as McGregor can usually demand extremely high value gates.

“Conor’s been ready to fight for a while. He’s in shape. He’s ready to go.

First of all, ‘Fight Island’ is going to be very important in any of these fights that are happening with people from outside the country. It kills me to do a fight with Conor without fans. Kills me. This guy’s doing almost $20 million gates.”

In terms of opponent ideas there are many options floating around for McGregor at the moment with a bout at welterweight against Jorge Masvidal being discussed by fans and media a lot. The Nate Diaz trilogy is also available for McGregor as well as a variety of other matchups in the lightweight and welterweight divisions.

McGregor’s aim is to work his way back to the world title but with current champion Khabib Nurmagomedov out of UFC 249 due to travel restrictions, Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje will face off for the interim title. This means the winner of that fight will likely get the shot at Nurmagomedov is there are no issues that delay the bout meaning McGregor may have to wait a while to get his shot.
