Well...at least the Canucks got younger?

The Vancouver Canucks shook up their defence in a pair of moves during trade deadline day.

Let’s touch on the player that the Canucks acquired first. After making one deal with the Blackhawks in the Adam Gaudette, Matthew Highmore swap, the Canucks made another trade with the Blackhawks by acquiring defenceman Madison Bowey and a 2021 fifth-round draft pick for a 2021 fourth-round draft pick.

Bowey, a second-round pick in 2013 by the Washington Capitals, has appeared in 156 NHL games for the Caps, the Red Wings, and the Blackhawks.

He was signed by Chicago for a two-year deal with $725,000 per season on January 28th, and he appeared in two games for the Blackhawks this season.

According to Thomas Drance, the Canucks had Bowey on their radar prior to signing Travis Hamonic in January.

Right now, the Canucks only have Tyler Myers and Nate Schmidt under contract as defenceman to protect in the expansion draft, although unsigned RFA defencemen Olli Juolevi and Brogan Rafferty would require protection as well.

Benn joins the Jets

In a rare move, Benning traded a veteran for a draft pick on trade deadline day.

33-year-old Jordie Benn has been traded to the Winnipeg Jets for a 2021 sixth-round draft pick.

Benn found some success playing alongside Quinn Hughes earlier in the season. It was a mild renaissance for the veteran after he was extremely underwhelming during the 2019-20 campaign.

During his first season with the Canucks, Benn was often a healthy scratch, with Travis Green choosing to play Oscar Fantenberg over the Victoria, BC native. Although he improved slightly in 2020-21, it was pretty clear that Benn would not be returning to the Canucks following this season.

What do you think of the Canucks moves on defence today?
