Wake With Elias- Sept 23/19- Canucks/Sens in Abbotsford Tonight, PP Changes Coming And More

Anne-Marie Sorvin-USA TODAY Sports

The first of 3 games in 4 nights goes tonight as the Canucks play host to the Ottawa Senators in Abbotsford.

After a fairly forgettable night in Salt Lake City against the Kings on Saturday that saw the Canucks D do a wonderful tribute to last year’s defence core and give up 7 to Los Angeles, they are back home for their final 3 preseason contests starting with back to back games against the Ottawa Senators. This one is in Abbotsford, home of ‘Shotgun’ Jake Virtanen, so there will likely be a big focus on Jake having a huge game tonight in front of family and friends.

It’s still early, but somehow the Senators have found a way to make everyone laugh.

The morning skate is at UBC, and then they’re going to bus out to Abbotsford in the afternoon traffic, which if you’ve ever done it, is not exactly a pleasant journey. Not sure why they’d do this, but there’s a lot of things this team does that make absolutely no sense at all.

We’ll have lineups for you in our game preview/thread coming up later today.

There should be more cuts coming soon as camp is underway in Utica for the Comets. The Canucks have a lot of decisions to make, and some of the younger players are making this a difficult decision for the coaching staff and management.

Speaking of changes, did you notice the power play units the Canucks rolled out on Saturday? The most notable changes were Bo Horvat and Alexander Edler moving to the 2nd unit, and I am all for this. With Elias Pettersson, Brock Boeser and Quinn Hughes on unit one, this actually makes sense to allow guys like Horvat and Edler go to unit two, and give the Canucks two different units that can get the job done. After a good night Thursday in Edmonton, the Canucks PP went 1 for 3 on Saturday. The penalty kill was awful though, as the Kings went 3 for 5 with the man advantage.

If you haven’t seen a close up look at this yet, here’s Thatcher Demko’s mask for the upcoming season. It’s pretty awesome.

The psychotic looking Johnny Canuck is a nice touch.
