Seattle Storm

The Seattle Storm have won one of their first three games to start the 2024 WNBA season. They dropped two straight games to the Minnesota Lynx to start their year before getting into the win column on the road against the Washington Mystics on Sunday. But the Storm are on the second game of a back-to-back in this matchup, the first back-to-back for any team in the WNBA so far this season.

To make things tougher, the status of All-Star forward Nneka Ogwumike is uncertain going into this Storm vs Liberty game. Ogwumike missed Sunday’s win over the Mystics due to an ankle injury sustained against the Lynx on Friday night. While she should return for this game, she is not likely to be at 100%, which could cause problems against a team as talented as New York.

Fortunately for the Storm, they finally got a good game from Jewell Loyd on Sunday. Loyd was a combined 7/40 from the field in Seattle’s first two games against the Lynx, but she broke through with a 24-point showing in Washington. Loyd’s field goal percentage has been a problem early in the year for the Storm, but she will be dangerous in this game as per the norm.

New York Liberty

The New York Liberty could not have asked for a better start to their WNBA season in 2024. They are 3-0, notching two straightforward wins over the much-hyped Fever along with a win over the aforementioned Mystics. This is the biggest test for the Liberty so far this season, though the rest advantage for New York has made them a heavy favorite.

Early in the year, the Liberty are getting it done on both ends of the floor. They rank first in the W in points per game at 92.7 and second in points allowed at 75.3. Granted, they have done this against a relatively weak schedule early on, but the Liberty deserve some credit for locking in on the defensive end of the floor while adjusting to changes among the role players on their roster between last season and this one.

Something worth noting for the Liberty early in the season is the fact that only the players in their starting five have averaged 12 minutes per game or more on the court. Depth is such an important thing to have in the WNBA. And while the Liberty certainly have role players who can produce, such as Ivana Dojkic and Kayla Thornton, Sandy Brondello is sticking with her starters for the most part early in the year.
