Los Angeles Dodgers: Bigger Fish to Fry
The Los Angeles Dodgers won 100 games and won the NL West by a staggering 16 games last season. The Dodgers should compete for the National League pennant with the Atlanta Braves this postseason. But the Dodgers failed to win the pennant last year, with the Arizona Diamondbacks winning it from this division instead. Even with Shohei Ohtani on their roster this year, there are no guarantees for this team despite the fact that they are already close to being off the board to win this division.
Arizona Diamondbacks: Another Surprising Season?
Nobody expected the Arizona Diamondbacks to be any good this season, but they managed to snag a Wild Card slot in the National League. They parlayed that into a trip to the World Series, something they will aim to build on in 2024. Zac Gallen should be one of the top NL Cy Young contenders this year to lead the Diamondbacks. But winning this division might be too tall a task for them, especially after the start the Dodgers have enjoyed.
San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres: Work to Be Done
The San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres have recent postseason play in their past. But the Giants and Padres are well behind the Dodgers in NL West futures markets early in 2024. The Padres losing Juan Soto has clearly hurt them, while the Giants struggling mightily to put runs on the board themselves. Still, a second-place finish in this division and a Wild Card berth are more than possible if either of these teams gets hot for a prolonged stretch.
Colorado Rockies: A Rough Year Ahead
No team in the National League had a worse record than the Colorado Rockies in 2023. They are not expected to pick up any ground this year, as they are already in the bottom-three in the National League as a whole in 2024. Without making any meaningful moves to improve their roster in the offseason, there is no reason to believe that a turnaround is coming in Colorado this year.
