NBA Southwest Division Odds

Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks have rebounded nicely from last season’s disappointing failure to make the postseason. They finished the regular season at the top of the Southwest Division, even though it feels like they still have better basketball ahead of them in the near future. The trade for Daniel Gafford helped the Mavs improve defensively, while the scoring touch of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving is undeniable as the Mavs head into the postseason.

New Orleans Pelicans

New Orleans finished in second place in the Southwest Division, which put them in the play-in tournament as the seventh seed in the Western Conference. The success of this team will depend largely on how effective Zion Williamson is, as his ability to get to the basket might not be as effective during more physical postseason play. But the Pelicans are heading in the right direction with a healthy Williamson on the floor.

Houston Rockets

Last year’s Houston Rockets were a joke, but they are in the process of turning things around. Ime Udoka has this team playing some respectable defense, while veterans Dillon Brooks and Fred VanVleet have lent some legitimacy to a roster that was way too young to have success a season ago. The Rockets are still not quite a playoff-caliber basketball team just yet, but they are moving in the right direction and that is a positive. If Alperen Sengun comes back healthy for next season, this team could become a threat out West.

Memphis Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies have fallen apart this season. Ja Morant briefly returned from suspension long enough to sustain a season-ending injury, while the acquisition of Marcus Smart has resulted in more missed games than on-court successes as well. Memphis should bounce back nicely next season, but they have thrown in the towel for this year, which is a shame.

San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs did exactly what they set out to do this past season. They tanked, and they tanked hard. They were rewarded for doing so, getting the first overall pick in the NBA Draft, and drafting Victor Wembanyama with that selection. But Wembanyama has not been enough to help the Spurs win many games in the 2023-24 season, as the Spurs could be in the mix for the top pick in the next NBA Draft as Wemby continues to gain valuable experience in his first year as an NBA player.
