USFL Best Bet #1: Stars -2.5 over Showboats

Last year, the Birmingham Stallions lost just one game en route to the USFL championship. This year, they will play in front of a home crowd again, which will give them a huge boost over other quality teams like the Generals, who fell short in the semifinals last season. Also working against the Generals here is that their most dynamic player, KaVontae Turpin, is in the NFL now and no longer available to New Jersey. Birmingham should start out on the right foot to kick off their 2023 campaign.
USFL Best Bet #3: Panthers (-105) over Gamblers
Michigan will have the advantage on Sunday when they face the Houston Gamblers. Both of these teams should see an upgrade at quarterback after moving on from terrible quarterbacks from a season ago. Michigan no longer has a Shea Patterson shaped anchor weighing them down, while Clayton Thorson is no longer in Houston. Josh Love will be a major upgrade for the Panthers, as the San Jose State alum will deliver his team a season opening win, as the Panthers are technically on the road despite this game being in a neutral city in Memphis.
USFL Best Bet #4: Maulers +3.5 over Breakers
This is another neutral site game, as the Breakers will play their home games in Birmingham this season. As a result, New Orleans does not home field advantage to rely on. They are also set to take a huge step back at quarterback and running back, with Kyle Sloter floating around the XFL and last year’s leading rusher Jordan Ellis no longer in the league. Pittsburgh was awful last year, but should be competitive here in a game that is closer than perceptions from last year would lead bettors to believe.

USFL Game Locations
There are set to be four locations for USFL games during the 2023 season, which means that not all teams will have home games. Here is a list of the four locations in which USFL competition will take place:
- Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, Canton, OH
- Protective Stadium, Birmingham, AL
- Ford Field, Detroit, MI
- Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, Memphis, TN
This is an increase over the two venues that the USFL used in 2022, as the league played games in Birmingham during the regular season and in Canton for the USFL championship and semifinals.
Each of those four venues will be the designated home game locations for two teams each. The New Jersey Generals and Pittsburgh Maulers will play their “home” games in Canton. The Birmingham Stallions and New Orleans Breakers will see their home dates played in Birmingham. The Michigan Panthers and Philadelphia Stars will play their home dates in Detroit. And the Houston Gamblers and Memphis Showboats, who replace the Tampa Bay Bandits, will be hosted in Memphis.
Is There Home Field Advantage in the USFL?
The home field advantage situation in the USFL is really difficult to navigate, as fewer than four teams will have a home field advantage. Only three teams, the Panthers, Showboats, and Stallions, will be in local markets for their home games. As we saw last season, stadiums were more or less empty in games featuring teams playing outside of the hub city of Birmingham. The Stallions, meanwhile, had a consistent home field advantage throughout the season, and we could see the Panthers and Showboats enjoy the same in 2023.
