England vs Senegal World Cup Pick & Prediction 12/4/22

The weekend’s action at the FIFA World Cup comes to a close with an England vs Senegal matchup in the Round of 16. From a soccer betting perspective, England will try to avoid the upset as -188 favorites to win inside the 90 minutes and -450 favorites to advance.

On the other side, Senegal looks to shock the world with an upset over the Three Lions. Senegal is +333 to qualify after advancing out of Group A over Ecuador and Qatar.

This game will be played at Al Bayt Stadium at 2:00 PM ET on Sunday, December 4, 2022.

Why Bet On Senegal:

Senegal are likely to employ a defensive minded approach to the matchup vs England. They are well equipped to defend England’s attackers with a back line led by well respected veteran Kalidou Koulibaly.

England had a mixed bag of form in the group stage, notably failing to score in their match against the United States. That match raises concerns as to whether or not they can break down a team with well setup defensive tactics.

Senegal frustrated the Netherlands in their only group stage match against a pre-tournament contender. They held off the Dutch until the late stages, when a Cody Gakpo 83’ winner tilted the course of the match.

England

The biggest question going into the Round of 16 for England is which version of the Three Lions is going to show up to the pitch on Sunday. Will it be the squad that blew past Iran and Wales in lopsided victories, or will it be the version of themselves that produced a Nil-Nil snoozer against the Americans?

Finding the early goal will be crucial against Senegal as after gaining the lead, England has poured it on over their opponents. England quickly scored one minute after Marcus Rashford put them up 1-0 over Wales, finding a third goal in the 68’ to give them a 3-0 win. The first goal to open up the match will be paramount to England’s hopes of avoiding another nervy game like the one against the US.

Harry Kane enters the Round of 16 still in search of his first goal at the tournament. Of the nine goals scored by England in the group stage, none have come from the face of their attack. If England wants to win the tournament, they will need some goalscoring moments from him.

Senegal

Senegal took advantage of a manageable Group A by beating Qatar and Ecuador to secure a place in the Round of 26. Now, the task at hand is to find a way to up their game to a further level to take on England.

Senegal will also be playing for the pride of their continent against England. African nations have lost eight of their nine World Cup knockout round games against European sides, a trend Senegal hopes to reverse on Sunday. England has also never lost to an African nation, winning fourteen and drawing six times in 20 matches over all competitions.

Senegal has history on their side as the only African nation to win a knockout round match over the Europeans. The 2002 World Cup featured a 2-1 win for Senegal over Sweden in the Round of 16.
