UFC Vegas 65 – Lewis vs Spivac Odds & Predictions

UFC Vegas 65 is a Fight Night Card that will take place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight card is punctuated by a main event at heavyweight. The 12 fight card lost a fight during fight week, but has predominantly close fights. Only one of the 12 fights has a favorite at -200 or more. UFC Vegas 65 has the misfortune of being on the heels of UFC 281. To say last week’s card is a tough act to follow would be a massive understatement. While we do not have any title fights or significant huge name matchups, we do have a huge amount of younger fighters entering fights to improve their current station.

UFC Vegas 65 takes place on Saturday, November 19th, 2022. We will see 12 fights leading into weigh ins. The first fighters are scheduled to make the walk to the octagon at 1PM EST, so be sure to make note the fights are day time this week. UFC Vegas 64 will be a steaming card. We will not have any televised portions. Both the prelims and the main card will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+.

With the promotion back at the UFC Apex, we will see the comparatively smaller sized octagon in use. This tends to give a slight edge to fighters that prefer grappling and a higher level of engagement.

Quick Look Back

UFC 281 saw us take a very slight loss from a betting perspective, despite the three fights on which we had wagers playing out essentially precisely as expected. We started the night off with the first fight and Carlos Ulberg, who was the best bet on the card. Ulberg appeared to be ready for a massive step up in competition as he absolutely dominated and starched Negumereanu in the first round. That bet cashed resoundingly.

Next up we had Silvana Gomez Juarez ITD at a big +240 figure against Kowlkiewicz. We knew Gomez Juarez was going to be the more dangerous striker throughout, but had the misfortune of a slip in the first round. Kowalkiewicz was able to take advantage and control Gomez Juarez on the mat for the remainder of the round and took a little something off the power of Gomez Juarez for the remainder of the fight. Gomez Juarez certainly landed the more damaging shots for the remainder of the fight, but did not have that same fight ending early power that we had seen on full display in her last two fights.

Our last bet on the card was on underdog Wellington Turman at +175. This fight played out precisely how we thought. Turman was the better striker and was visibly hurting Petroski on the feet. Turman however had some low fight IQ hiccups, and tried to jump on guillotines in spots when he was in control. It was eerily similar to his coach Glover Texeira jumping guillotine and ultimately being finished in the fifth round to lose his belt to Jiri Prochazka. Turman certainly had the more complete and better skill set, and would have cruised to a win with a more intelligent approach.

UFC Vegas 65 Fight Card

This UFC Vegas 65 Fight Night card is certainly not the most jaw dropping from a fighter names perspective, but it certainly has its qualities. We have dynamite handed Derrick Lewis in another main event with his knock out or bust approach. We also have 11 of 12 fights with a betting line under -195. There will be competitiveness throughout the card.

Main Event

The main event will see Serghei Spivac headline a card for the first time against long time main eventer Derrick Lewis. Spivac is a -195 favorite in his first main event, but not in a fight that we can call the most difficult of his career. He has previous fights with Tom Aspinall and Tai Tuivasa, who would universally be considered more difficult fights than Lewis. He has had mixed results, as has Lewis, who has fought essentially every significant heavyweight with the exception of the GOAT Stipe Miocic.

Lewis

Lewis enters this fight on a losing streak for the first time since 2019. He has suffered consecutive knock outs against heavy handed Tai Tuivasa and Serghei Pavlovich. He will have a totally different fight in this matchup than the fire fights he had in the last two. Lewis, particularly in five round fights, is a fighter that needs to win via KO or will find himself on the losing end. His knock out power and explosiveness in bursts has long been his calling card, and it will be no different in this fight. If he is not able to knock his opponent out inside of two rounds, perhaps three, he will be ground down and finished on the mat.

It should be noted that the only wrestler/grappler type of opponent that Lewis has been matched up with and lost to in recent years is former champ Daniel Cormier. Lewis holds wins over Tybura, Ivanov, Latifi, Oleinik and Blaydes in the last five years.

Spivac

Serghei Spivac is on a two fight win streak and has additionally won five of his last six fights. He has fought a mixed bag in terms of level of competition, and it has mostly played out that he beats fighters he should and loses to fighters he should lose to. The names of his opponents in his most recent five wins are Sakai, Hardy, Oleinik, Vanderaa and Felipe. While he can only beat the fighters put in front of him, this is not an awe inspiring list. The other four fighters he has fought in his UFC tenure are Aspinall, Tybura, Tuivasa and Harris. He is just 1-3 against that more higher end list, with KO losses coming to Aspinall and Harris. His signature win however was against Tuivasa, who he dominated in the wrestling. That was a lesser version of Tuivasa, but an impressive win nonetheless.

Spivac will need to return to his clinch and wrestling heavy approach in this fight to find success. He may win the striking volume at range but he will be the fighter in danger for as long as a stand up portion of this fight plays out. Instead grinding Lewis on the cage and mat and wearing on the cardio of Lewis until it fails is his absolute and clear cut path to victory. Now, it is easy to say fading the power of Lewis early in the fight is “all he has to do.” That is no easy task, and we have seen Spivac succumb to the power of developed power strikers already. Both Aspinall and Harris finished Spivac in the first round of their respective fights.

If Betting…

Despite the needed knock out on the Lewis side, the betting line feels a bit wide. Lewis has had success in this style of matchup before, and we have seen winning streaks derailed many times by a clean right hand in this division. I cannot go so far as to make Lewis a dedicated betting pick, but if forcing action on this main event, the Lewis +200 ITD line is certainly the proper method of attack.

Co-Main Event

The co-main event is a bit of a banger that is just outside the top 15 rankings at light heavyweight. Kennedy Nzechuwku is a -175 favorite over Ion Cutelaba. We will have a wager on this fight so much more on this one in a bit.

Remainder Of UFC Vegas 65 Fight Card

We get to see the next steps from a number of different prospects and get more of a glimpse into their respective ceilings on this card. On the main card we will see if Waldo Cortes-Acosta can keep his boxing levels above his opponents and if he has addressed defending the calf kick. Andre Fialho will try to bounce back against grizzled vet Muslim Salikhov in a striker’s duel. The biggest name on the under card is Jack Della Maddalena, who will try to make it three for three on first round knock outs to start his UFC tenure.

On the undercard we have a matchup in the women’s flyweight rankinigs between Jennifer Maia and Maryna Moroz. Miles Johns will look to bounce back from a loss with his new Glory fight team in tow. We will also have a pair of TUF 30 fighters looking to take a step up as small favorites in Ricky Turcios and Brady Hiestand.

UFC Vegas 65 Bet Sheet

We will have a trio of bets on the 12 fight card. We have a pair of extremely live underdogs and a fight to end inside the distance on our bet sheet.

I was very close to pulling the trigger on two moderate favorites. Those are the TUF 30 contestants, Ricky Turcios and Brady Hiestand. Frankly, they are both in spots where they should win their respective fights, but I need to see some level of improvement on the respective striking of each fighter before I can fully throw my trust at them. If you are looking for additional action, flat plays on the pair of -155 favorites would be prudent.
