Buffalo Bills Betting Preview
The Buffalo Bills were one of the top teams in the NFL last season, and came up just a couple of wins short of the Super Bowl. Their final game of 2021 was one of the best games in recent NFL history, as they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in an overtime thriller. This season, the Bills will look to avoid such a heartbreaking playoff defeat and finally break through for a Super Bowl title.
Josh Allen will once again lead the Bills this season, as he is one of the top MVP candidates in the league going into the year. Buffalo will have a new offensive coordinator, as Ken Dorsey takes over for new Giants head coach Brian Daboll. But with Allen and his receiving options being so dynamic, there is not expected to be much of a dropoff from the Buffalo offense.

Offseason Transactions
Key Additions: Matt Barkley, Case Keenum, Jamison Crowder, Duke Johnson, O.J. Howard, David Quessenberry, Rodger Saffold, Shaq Lawson, Von Miller
Key Departures: Mitchell Trubisky, Matt Breida, Cole Beasley, Emmanuel Sanders, Jon Feliciano, Mario Addison, Jerry Hughes, Vernon Butler, Harrison Phillips, Star Lotulelei, A.J. Klein, Levi Wallace
The Bills did a nice job of beefing up their offensive line in the offseason, with Quessenberry and Saffold set to play major roles for them. Duke Johnson is also an interesting acquisition, as the Bills have struggled to find answers from young backs like Devin Singletary and Zack Moss in recent seasons. Of course, Von Miller and Shaq Lawson will be huge for the defense of the Bills as well.
In terms of departures, there are a few significant names that the Bills lost. Emmanuel Sanders was a nice complementary piece for Buffalo in the passing game. But the biggest losses for Buffalo may be on the offensive line. Mario Addison, Jerry Hughes, and Star Lotulelei have all been significant factors in the past, and while the Bills added to their D-line with Miller, one of the NFL’s top defenses could be a little softer this year.
Buffalo Bills Offensive Stats
2021 (Rank) | 2020 (Rank) | |
---|---|---|
Yards Per Play | 5.9 (T-3rd) | 6.0 (T-6th) |
Yards Per Rush Attempt | 4.8 (T-5th) | 4.2 (T-19th) |
Yards Per Pass Attempt | 7.1 (T-15th) | 7.8 (T-5th) |
Points Per Game | 29.8 (3rd) | 29.9 (3rd) |
Offensive DVOA | 9.7% (10th) | 15.6% (5th) |
Turnovers | 22 (T-13th) | 22 (T-20th) |
Buffalo is so hard to defend as currently constructed, thanks to the versatility of Josh Allen. Allen has a cannon of an arm, and has a combination of size and speed that allows him to make big plays running the ball as well. His ability to improvise and extend plays has really improved in the NFL, and Allen is likely to be an MVP candidate from start to finish this year. The big question is how the move to Dorsey at offensive coordinator will help or hurt this dynamic offense.
Buffalo Bills Defensive Stats
2021 (Rank) | 2020 (Rank) | |
---|---|---|
Yards Per Play Allowed | 4.8 (1st) | 5.6 (T-16th) |
Yards Per Rush Attempt Allowed | 4.4 (T-16th) | 4.7 (T-25th) |
Yards Per Pass Attempt Allowed | 5.5 (1st) | 6.6 (T-10th) |
Points Per Game Allowed | 18.3 (1st) | 23.2 (T-14th) |
Defensive DVOA | -18.0% (1st) | -2.2% (12th) |
Takeaways | 30 (T-3rd) | 26 (T-3rd) |
While the Bills’ offense received so much credit for their success last season, their defense was what really propelled them to greatness. Buffalo was number one in the league in scoring defense and yards per play allowed, as well as DVOA on the defensive side of the ball. For the Bills, the question is now whether they can get the stops they need in big moments in the playoffs, as they have proven themselves to be elite during the regular season.
Positives & Negatives
The vast majority of the Bills roster is filled with positives, as they may have the best roster in the league from top to bottom. But the top positive is the play of Josh Allen, who has broken into the upper echelon of NFL quarterbacks. The pairing of Allen with Stefon Diggs could get even better this season, which is a scary thought for the rest of the NFL.
If there is a negative for the Bills this season, it could be their punting situation. They chose Matt Araiza as their punter after a competition with Matt Haack in the preseason, but Araiza was immediately accused of some sexual indiscretions, to the point that Matt Barkley punted in his place during the final week of the preseason. Where the Bills go from here could be significant to their ability to win the field position battle.
2022 Buffalo Bills Win Total Prediction: Over 11.5 Wins
This is a Bills team with very few major flaws as currently constructed, and they should be one of the last few teams standing in the NFL again this year. Expect the Bills to go over the 11.5 win total that books have set for them, and for Josh Allen to be one of the last couple of names in consideration for the league’s Most Valuable Player honors.
