Pittsburgh Steelers Betting Preview

The Pittsburgh Steelers are entering their first season in the post-Ben Roethlisberger era. They have multiple options at the quarterback position coming into this year, and the question will be whether any of those options can help them compete in the AFC North. In such a competitive division, a slow start could be enough to keep the Steelers out of playoff contention for the rest of the year.

Fortunately, the Steelers have their defense and running game to lean on, which will help make up for any shortcomings they experience under center. The question is whether those strengths can outweigh the biggest negative in the NFL, as a lack of a quality starting quarterback can be enough to torpedo even the best supporting roster.

Pittsburgh Steelers vs Kansas City Chiefs Wild Card Pick & Prediction

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs met once this season with the Chiefs winning that game in blowout fashion. Now, the Steelers will look for revenge on Wild Card weekend, while the Chiefs look to get a step closer […]

Offseason Transactions

Key Additions: Mitchell Trubisky, Larry Ogunjobi, Myles Jack, Kenny Pickett

Key Departures: Ben Roethlisberger, Juju Smith-Schuster, James Washington, Eric Ebron, Trai Turner, Taco Charlton, Stephon Tuitt, Joe Haden

The quarterback position will look different for the Steelers going into this season, as Ben Roethlisberger has retired. Roethlisberger’s retirement means we could see Mitchell Trubisky as the team’s starting quarterback, or we could end up with Kenny Pickett under center. Neither of those options is all that appealing, frankly, but Roethlisberger’s health had deteriorated to the point that any move feels like a lateral move.

The team made a couple of nice defensive additions in Ogunjobi and Jack, which will make up for a couple of key losses on that side of the ball. All in all, it feels like the Steelers didn’t get much better or worse than they were a season ago. But with the Ravens likely to be better than they were last year, and the Bengals remaining a threat, that may not be good enough to get back to the playoffs.

Pittsburgh Steelers Offensive Stats

2021 (Rank)2020 (Rank)
Yards Per Play4.8 (T-28th)5.2 (T-24th)
Yards Per Rush Attempt3.8 (28th)3.6 (32nd)
Yards Per Pass Attempt6.0 (T-30th)6.4 (T-27th)
Points Per Game20.2 (21st)26.6 (12th)
Offensive DVOA-11.0% (25th)-4.7% (22nd)
Turnovers20 (T-10th)18 (T-9th)

Pittsburgh saw its offense take a step back last season from a yardage and scoring standpoint. At this point, they are a volume rushing team above all else, which is not a bad thing to be when you have Najee Harris as your workhorse. Pittsburgh has been very good about not turning the ball over in recent seasons, and the concern is that could change in the transition to Trubisky, Pickett, or whoever ends up at quarterback.

Pittsburgh Steelers Defensive Stats

2021 (Rank)2020 (Rank)
Yards Per Play Allowed5.6 (T-20th)5.0 (T-2nd)
Yards Per Rush Attempt Allowed5.0 (32nd)4.3 (T-11th)
Yards Per Pass Attempt Allowed6.7 (T-16th)6.0 (T-3rd)
Points Per Game Allowed24.4 (22nd)21.2 (T-5th)
Defensive DVOA-0.6% (14th)-20.2% (1st)
Takeaways22 (T-14th)27 (2nd)

Pittsburgh took a step back defensively last season as well, but there is an excuse for that. With their offense struggling, the defense of the Steelers was asked to be on the field more in 2021 than they were in 2020. The Steelers’ time of possession dropped by 1:35 year over year, which puts even the best defense in a tough spot. This season, the Steelers could be asked to do even more as they figure out their future at quarterback.

Positives & Negatives

The biggest positive for Pittsburgh going into this season is their running game, which should help to ease their quarterback transition. The Steelers will not have a top-two offense in the AFC North this season. But their ability to move the ball with Najee Harris will make them at least somewhat competent when they have the football.

On the negative side, the quarterback position is a huge question mark for the Steelers. They are going to need to figure it out quickly to be competitive. But that is not likely to happen, as Trubisky and Pickett are both going to have their share of problems regardless of who the top option is when the season kicks off.

2022 Pittsburgh Steelers Win Total Prediction: Under 7.5 Wins

For now, the Pittsburgh Steelers are a sub-.500 team, until they can figure things out at the most important position on the field. There is a good structure here for the organization to take a huge leap forward in a year or two. But until they are solidified at quarterback, the future is going to be the only thing Pittsburgh has to look forward to. We will gladly take the under on Pittsburgh’s 2022 win total.
