UFC 278: Conor McGregor mocks Kamaru Usman for losing against Leon Edwards

Former UFC featherweight and lightweight double-champion Conor Mcgregor let his thoughts known as the Nigerian-American fighter Kamaru Usman lost against Leon Edwards at UFC 278 on Saturday.

McGregor, 35, had made it clear since the beginning that he cheered for Edwards. After Usman’s knockout loss via a head kick courtesy of Edwards, McGregor laughed at Usman. He also shared a photo of Usman’s face when he was knocked down on Twitter.

“I don’t like the boy not sleeping with his men hahahaha twat got twatted,” the Irishman tweeted.

Afterward, McGregor proceeded with congratulating Edwards on his win against Usman.

“An amazing scene to witness! Huge congrats Leon! A real good, solid and dedicated mixed martial artist! The uk’s second only ufc champion! Incredible! Congrats mate!” The Notorious wrote.

McGregor and Usman have been reported to be not really getting along well. The two fighters have continuously thrown shades at each other in the past few years. Previously, Usman taunted McGregor during his bout with Jorge Masvidal in June, saying he wanted “to “break Conor McGregor’s face”.

They also have challenged each other to fight although it has never played out so far.

Usman’s defeat

On Saturday night, UFC president Dana White spoke to reporters that Usman was taken to a hospital after receiving a head kick from Edwards.

Usman went to defend his welterweight title for the sixth in his career. He won through four rounds before Edward turned the tables and shocked everyone by knocking out Usman, who is the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter.

Usman and Edwards fought for the first time in 2015 and said in an interview with UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier that he had been looking for a rematch since, despite winning via unanimous decision. However, he also said that he was “scared” of Leon.

“Every day, I am still scared, I am scared of Leon right now,” Usman said.

“I’m not gonna lie to you, I am worried about Leon, I am worried. His 1-2 [jab-cross] is more fluid than mine, slicker than mine, might be a little bit faster than mine, you know. But one thing I gotta remind myself is that when he throws his 1-2 it looks slicker, nicer, but when I throw my 1-2, they go to sleep…”

Losing against Edwards ends Usman’s 19-fight win streak, although it is still only his second loss in his MMA career and the first in the UFC. He has the third most championship victories in UFC welterweight history, the second longest UFC winning streak after Anderson Silva and a 100 percent takedown defense rate.

Usman won the welterweight title in his fight against Tyron Woodley at UFC 235 in March 2019 and has successfully defended the title five times before his loss on Saturday. Usman was upset about the loss but congratulated Edwards on his tweet regardless.

So far, Usman has fought and won against Edwards, Masvidal, Woodley, Colby Covington, Sean Strickland, Gilbert Burns, and Rafael Dos Anjos, among others.

As for Edwards, despite winning against Usman, he said that he still had a long way to prove himself as a fighter. He also said that he didn’t react well against Usman’s attacks during five rounds.

“That wasn’t my best performance, and I did not feel myself in this,” Edwards said. “I feel like I have much more to offer,” he said.
