Reports: Bucs sign former Raiders DE Carl Nassib

Just this week, veteran defensive end Carl Nassib reportedly will be returning to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers via a one-year contract after he was released by the Las Vegas Raiders on March 17, 2022.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that both Nassib and the Bucs have “reached agreement”. However, there is not much information in regards to the nature of the DE’s contract, but if the news were to be true, Nassib’s return this year will mark his second stint in Tampa Bay after playing for the franchise previously in 2018-2019.

“I can confirm Bucs have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with outside linebacker Carl Nassib. Adds depth after Cam Gill’s injury Saturday. @adamschefter was on it first,” The Athletic’s Greg Auman wrote.

Nassib’s career in NFL

Nassib was a Penn State Nittany Lions product who debuted in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns in the 2016 NFL Draft. The Browns selected him in the third round 65th pick. On June 28, the young DE signed a four-year contract worth $3.2 million alongside an approximately $890,000 bonus. The following year, Nassib played as a starter.

However, his time in Cleveland was one that is short as the franchise waived him on September 2, 2018. He wrapped his career with the team by playing in 30 games, made 5.5 sacks, nine passes as well as 34 solo tackles.

The Buccaneers claimed the 29-year-old off waivers and he would remain with the team for two seasons. Nassib’s time with the Bucs was arguable the most productive in his NFL career. Despite only appearing in 29 games, the Pennsylvania native made 12.5 total sacks, two passes, and 46 solo tackles.

Nassib’s most recent stint before hitting the free agent market was two seasons stint with the Raiders in 2020-2021. The team had him under a three-year, $25 million contract. As a rotation player, Nassib posted much lower stats in Sin City compared to his time in Cleveland and Tampa Bay. He was released from the team in March this year.

“It was a great time we had. I have so much love for Las Vegas. It allowed me to do a lotta great things,” he said. “And I think that there’ll be more — there’ll be better opportunities in the future,” Nassib told Good Morning America in July 2022.

Nassib became the first active openly gay player in the NFL and his potential signing with the Bucs was welcomed by the sport’s enthusiasts.

“Every locker room culture is different. But the thing that was most telling for me about the one in Tampa was that there were Bucs players who told me after Carl Nassib came out, that they suspected/knew he was gay, and they not only honored that secret but supported him fully,” ESPN’s Jenna Laine said.

CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin noted that Nassib will likely compete for the reserve position for the outside linebacker rotation in Tampa Bay. Players such as linebacker Shaquil Barrett and outside linebacker Joe Tryon may already be locked to start in pass rushers position, but OL Cam Gill’s backup position may be up for grabs as he recently sustained a foot injury.
