Nick Kyrgios defends Daniil Medvedev from spectator’s callout

Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios defended Daniil Medvedev after a spectator called out the latter following their match at the Canadian Open in Montreal.

One of the spectators was reported to call Medvedev a “loser” after his loss to Kyrgios in the said tournament. Kyrgios did not take the incident kindly and proceeded to defend Medvedev with his tweet.

“Disgusting behaviour. This is the best we have in the sport, fans need to show some respect,” Kyrgios said on Twitter.

Medvedev himself said that he was compelled to respond to the spectator who jeered him for his loss. The conversation was reported to escalate although Medvedev could be heard saying “I’m super calm”.

During the incident, the other spectators told the man to apologize to Medvedev.

“I was disappointed after losing the match (in three sets to Kyrgios),” Medvedev said. “But when someone mocks me, I’ll respond.

“It would be bad to let people shout bad things at me and just keep walking. I will ask what his problem is.”

According to Medvedev, the young man’s father was present during the match and joined the dispute, prompting Medvedev to question the father’s parenting method.

“The father of the guy said something to me also — I say educate your kid. I won’t let people mock me.” the reigning US Open champion said.

Kyrgios vs Medvedev

Kyrgios managed to defeat Medvedev by 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-2 on Wednesday in the Canadian Open.

Kyrgios was 3-1 against Medvedev and currently has won 14 of 15 matches, losing to Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon Final. He ranked 37th and has won his seventh ATP Tour title in Washington while Medvedev won his first title of the year at the Los Cabos Open last week.

After the match, Kyrgios said that he already had clear objective on how he was going to play against the current World No.1 Medvedev.

“I executed better than he did, that’s all it comes down to. He won the first set and I feel like I had opportunities there as well, so hopefully I can just keep this rolling,” Kyrgios said.

Similarly, Medvedev commended Kyrgios for playing really well, despite of his own loss. He contemplated having the Australian as his opponent in the first match.

“The only thing that was a shame for me is that I played him so early because he is fit. He’s among the top 10 or 15 players, so he will soon be a seeded player. It’s a shame to have such a player as an opponent in the first (match),” Medvedev said.

As a result of his loss, Medvedev would need to reach the quarter-finals to ensure he keeps his spot at the top of the ATP rankings.

Meanwhile, after winning against Medvedev, the 27-year-old Kyrgios has won another match against a fellow Australian and friend Alex de Minaur in the third round at the Canadian Open. He was in control throughout the match from start to finish, winning by 6-2, 6-3.

“Incredibly tough after yesterday’s big high, playing Daniil, and the crowd was amazing. It was a day I’ll probably never, ever forget,” he said.
