Nick Sirianni calls out Robert Saleh after late hit on Jalen Hurts

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts received a hit from the New York Jets linebacker Quincy Williams during the preseason match between the two teams.

Hurts was out of bounds when Williams tackled him. Several Eagles players immediately confront Williams.

Lane Johnson, Pro Bowl lineman, said that there were not many things players could do unless they wanted to be punished by the NFL.

“We ran over there and didn’t do nothing,” Johnson said. “We were like a big dog that ran to the fence and didn’t do a whole lot. If you do something, then you get suspended. We didn’t like it.”

This move was deemed unnecessary and earned Williams a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty. Fortunately, Hurts wasn’t injured and continued to play.

However, the Eagle’s head coach Nick Sirianni did not take this well. He hurled expletives at Robert Saleh, New York head coach, from across the field.

In the end, Sirianni said that he wasn’t mad at Saleh. He was more upset with the player but admitted his anger was misplaced and redirected at the coach.

“I wasn’t mad at Coach Saleh. I was mad at the situation.” Sirianni said.

“I was more mad at the player than Coach Saleh… I was just sticking up for Jalen. I’ll never apologize for sticking up for my players.”

Hurts also expressed his surprise that the people were so focused on the hit.

“I’m very pleased to be talking about this hit if this is the biggest takeaway from the night,” Hurts said. “You definitely don’t want to come out here in these games and take hits, let alone a late hit like that. But it happened.

“I’m not tripping about it. It happens. I’m healthy. I’m fine. I got right back up and played the next play.”

Jets’ reactions

Despite being rightfully upset, the Eagles quickly got over the incident. On the other hand, Saleh spoke with Williams on the sidelines as the play was taking place.

“Egregiously awful from Quincy, and he knows that. He knows better,” Saleh said after the game.

Saleh also explained his expectations of Williams. “Those are the plays that Quincy has to get out of his game if he wants to become the linebacker that I think he can be, that we all think he can be.”

“It’s one thing to make a mistake in the game, it’s another thing to make a mistake that leads to points, touchdowns,” Saleh added.

Later, Saleh shared his opinion on Hurts.

“It’s a good drive, we’re off the field, Jalen is a phenomenal quarterback, and to stop them, hold them to a field goal after giving up an explosive, pretty good showing for the first drive,” he explained. “Then to have that happen extends the drive. Anytime you extend the drive like that it’s probably going to lead to bigger points.

“So Quincy knows, but at the same time those are the plays he’s got to get out of his game if he wants to be the player we think he can be.”

Williams admitted his error when he spoke to Rich Cimini of ESPN.

“I should’ve slowed down. It was dumb on me,” Williams said. “That was really it. It was like of like one of those learning moments. Just let up. I wasn’t paying attention to where the sideline was.”
