Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds face off in second Field of Dreams game

The Cincinnati Reds clashed against the Chicago Cubs at a remote stadium constructed as a tribute to the 1989 movie “Field of Dreams.” The match ended with the Cubs snatching a victory over the Reds with a score of 4-2.

Nostalgic opening

The crowd was enraptured when Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. and his father appeared from the recognizable outfield cornstalks. It was a well-known moment that anyone who had watched the movie would know.

“Hey dad, do you wanna have a catch,” Griffey Jr. said.

Responding to Griffey Jr.’s request, his father said: “I’d like that.”

The Griffeys played catch while other parents and children joined them on the field with their own balls and gloves. Then, the Cubs and the Reds arrived while wearing special uniforms that were inspired by how the franchises looked in the early 20th century.

“What they’ve done here is incredible. … I think every baseball player should experience this,” Kyle Farmer, Reds third baseman, said.

The Cubs and the Reds still had a good time despite the game not reaching the last year’s thrill when the White Sox defeated the Yankees in a walk-off. The game ended with Cubs defeating Reds 4-2.

“There is no way anything could take away from the day we had here,” Reds manager David Bell said after the game. “It’s a great experience. Heard so many people throughout our clubhouse saying it’s something they’ll remember for the rest of their life.”

Drew Smyly, Cubs starter, agreed. He was accompanied by his wife and daughter as they celebrated their daughter’s fifth birthday.

“Just being a tourist, taking it all in,” he said. “You just feel like a kid again. You’re in the middle of Iowa playing a baseball game. It’s awesome.

“I hope she remembers it. I know I will.”

Before the game started, players toured the movie set which sparked a feeling that many had not experienced in a while.

“It felt like a college atmosphere,” Cubs shortstop Nico Hoerner said. “Definitely not normal. I could visibly see a horse from shortstop pretty easily. It was definitely quieter than normal. I had to turn down the PitchCom.”

Several misfortunes

Unfortunately, the night did not go on without a hitch. The Reds’ second baseman Jonathan India had to leave due to a left leg bruise. India not having suffered a fracture allowed Bell to proclaim him day-to-day.

The Cubs also encountered a setback as their catcher Willson Contreras rolled his ankle after rounding second base in the third inning. However, he managed to keep going.

“The field conditions were great,” Patrick Wisdom, Cubs third baseman, said before the first pitch. “I didn’t know what to expect but everything was great.”

Cubs’ manager David Ross said he was glad to be a part of the game, especially considering it won’t be held in 2023 due to construction. He also mentioned being distracted throughout the night by “looking over the corn”

Seiya Suzuki, the Cubs’ outfielder who is originally from Japan, had an eye-opening experience throughout the game.

“There aren’t many cornfields like this in Japan,” Suzuki said.

MLB annually hosts games at the Field of Dreams stadium, which was initially constructed for a movie with the same name in 1989. Originally created for Dubuque County, Iowa, the location is now a baseball field and a popular culture tourist destination close to Dyersville.
