LIV Golf shuts down rumor about players not getting prize money

Saudi-backed LIV Golf has denied the rumor that the league’s players are not receiving the Prize Money, and said that the notion was misunderstood.

Earlier this summer, at LIV’s tournament outside Portland, Brooks Koepka and other golfers, were asked whether their tournament winnings counted against the Money they received.

Meanwhile, LIV Golf noted that every winner would be given the prize money excluded from their contract.

Responding to this, LIV Golf president and chief operating officer Atul Khosla denied that players would only get prize money if the amount exceeded the guaranteed payout in their contract. Khosla said that the prize money LIV players receive from PGA would not affect the payment they received from their contractual earnings.

“I haven’t yet received the transcript from the proceedings [Tuesday], but it seems there is a misunderstanding regarding prize purses,’’ Khosla said.

“This issue is simple, and we’ve addressed it before. Prize money is of course separate from the contractual monies that players earn. As you already know, prize money is not subtracted from a player’s contractual earnings. That’s all there is to it.”

PGA tour suspension

On Tuesday, three LIV golfers Talor Gooch, Matt Jones, and Hudson Swafford were in a hearing due to their suspension from Pga Tour. They appealed to the PGA to compete in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, but the appeal was rejected by Beth Labson Freeman, a federal judge in California.

Freeman decided that the three golfers who joined the LIV tour would not be able to compete in the PGA Tour’s post-season. Freeman said that it was the “big money” guaranteed from LIV Golf that will not inflict financial loss as her consideration to reject the appeal.

Robert Waters, the players’ attorney said that the judge’s statement was the opposite of the real condition. Speaking for one hour in the hearing process, Waters said that LIV golfer as independent contractor was entitled to play as well as prize money even if they played for LIV’s tournament.

“Well, they do, but then they have to win money to recoup against the contract, so they are a little bit different,” Waters said.

PGA Tour opposes LIV

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan has warned that any player who signed with LIV would be banned for life. The hijacking of PGA Tour golfers started when Phil Mickelson joined the LIV side and was reported to have signed the largest contract worth $200 million.

As CEO of LIV Golf, Greg Norman said that he respected the PGA tour decision from a different “point of view”.

“We understand market value and that the [PGA] Tour works for us, we don’t work for the Tour,” he said.

“Phil asks tough questions. He’s not here to placate anybody. He’s got a mind of his own and his own opinions, which can be incredibly strong and poignant.”

Monahan added the purse valued at $15 million for the 2021 PGA Championship at Southern Hills Golf Club in Tulsa and introduced the $40 million Player Impact Program (PIP) as a money pool for every PGA golfer who best engaged with fans through social media.

According to Alan Shipnuck of Fire Pit Collective, PGA Tour continues its persuasion to maintain its golfers by raising the money given to them.

The PIP program has been raised to $50 million, the FedEx Cup prize pool increased to $75 million, increasing the 2022 tournament purses to $427 million, and the Players Championship contract payout to $20 million.
