NFL preseason, Week 1: Tennessee Titans lost 23-10 to Baltimore Ravens

The Tennessee Titans recorded a 23-10 loss in its first NFL preseason game, playing against the Baltimore Ravens.

Starting quarterback rookie Mike Willis failed to lead the Titans to a win. Titans head coach Mike Vrabel said it was the mistakes of his players that led them to the defeat. Vrabel said the match against the Ravens was a “test”.

“It’s a humbling game, and we have a lot of work to do,” Vrabel said. “I told them coming down that this was going to be a great challenge and a great test. Some guys showed up, and some guys are going to need to go back home and get better.”

It was Willis’ first time as a starter, and the 23-old-player admitted he made mistakes in the game.

“We have a lot to learn from, a lot to look at on film, but it was good to get out there again and play football,” Willis said. “I missed some things probably, and I just made up for it with my legs. I can’t continue to rely on that, but that is what the preseason is for.

“I’m going to remember the things I should have done better. But it is a learning experience – it’s the preseason, but it’s an opportunity at the same time. I just have to continue to work.”

Some regular starters did not travel to Baltimore for the game, including Ryan Tannehill, Derrick Henry, Robert Woods, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, Austin Hooper, Taylor Lewan, Nate Davis, and Ben Jones.

Game recap

In the first quarter, the Titans went for third down and out on two of their first three possession. A fumble by Julius Chestnut led to the Ravens scoring a touchdown run via Mike Davis. Willis scored a touchdown to tie the game at 7-7 in the second quarter.

The Ravens secured a 14-10 lead halfway, thanks to a touchdown by Shemar Bridges, which he scored after catching a pass from quarterback Tyler Huntley. The Titans’ Chris Jackson, who covered Bridges, could not prevent the ball from making its way to Huntley. Jackson was then out due to a knee injury.

In the third quarter, Ravens extended their lead to 17-10 on a 47-yard field goal by kicker Justin Tucker.

Titans QB Logan Woodside entered the game as a substitute for Willis. He said the Ravens played better than the Titans.

“The guys did a good job,” Woodside said. “I just let them down a little bit tonight. I just have to watch the film and get back to work.”

Ravens secured the win at 23-10 in the fourth quarter on two more field goals by Tucker.

Willis’ performance

Despite the loss, Titans rookie quarterback Willis recorded a touchdown run, six out of 11 pass completions with 107 passing yards, and 21 rushing yards when playing in the first half.

He made his only touchdown from seven-yard away from the Ravens’ end zone. He moved back for a 15-yard distance and spun his body to the left to break the opponents’ defensive formation. Then, he sneaked through the corner and shoved his body inside to run to the end zone to secure six points for the Titans.

The Titans will face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2 on Saturday, August 20.
