Montreal, Toronto to host National Bank Open 2022

The National Bank Open will be held at full capacity for the first time in three years in Montreal at IGA Stadium from August 5 to 14 and in Toronto at Sobeys Stadium from August 6 to 14.

“We are very excited to announce the player list for the 2022 National Bank Open presented by Rogers,” Montreal tournament director Eugene Lapierre said in a statement.

“Personally, I’m really looking forward to it, and I am far from the only one, judging by the sales that promise to be a record high. The Open will be the must-see event of the summer,” he added.

Montreal

22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal will be in action in Montreal. He has won five winner’s trophies in Canada and is the current men’s event champion in Montreal. With another victory, he can equal Ivan Lendl’s 1989 record of six Canadian Open titles.

World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev will also compete in the event. He did not participate in Wimbledon due to a ban on players from Russia and Belarus. No. 8 Andrey Rublev, No. 27 Karen Khachanov, and No. 42 Aslan Karatsev will also return after being barred from Wimbledon. Germany’s Alexander Zverev will have to miss the tournament due to an injury in his ankle, which he suffered during the French Open.

The Canadian-born Auger-Aliassime, who is ninth in the rankings, will gain from the absences of some players. He will emerge to become a top-eight seed, ensuring him a first-round.

Denis Shapovalov is the other Canadian with a direct entry. He fell to No. 24 after losing in the first round of five of his last six tournaments.

Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic is on the list of entries for the National Bank Open at the Jarry Tennis Centre in Montreal. However, tournament director Eugène Lapierre said he was unlikely to compete. The entry list features the top 30 ATP Tour players, including Stefanos Tsitsipas, Casper Ruud, teen sensation Carlos Alcaraz, Montrealer Félix Auger-Aliassime, and Jannik Sinner in the top 10.

Toronto

In Toronto, the entry list includes 41 of the Hologic WTA Tour’s top 43 players, including two-time Roland-Garros champion and No. 1 Iga Swiatek. Fan favorites Naomi Osaka, Coco Gauff, and Toronto-born star Emma Raducanu are also on the list.

23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams has decided to join the National Bank Open main draw for the first time since finishing second to winner Bianca Andreescu in 2019. It has been confirmed that Andreesque will also participate in the event.

“Not only is this one of the strongest, if not the strongest, player list we’ve ever submitted, but it’s also the first time since 2019 that the National Bank Open returns to full capacity,” Toronto event director Karl Hale said in a release.

“We’re thrilled that these players will have a chance to play in front of a packed house, and we’re even happier for our fans who will get to watch tennis’ very best at the 2022 edition of the National Bank Open.”
