The BMW Open By American Express is an ATP 250 tennis tournament that will take place on the clay courts at the Munchner Tennis- und Turnierclub in Munich, Germany.

In 1930 the Munchner Tennis- und Turnierclub changed its location, moving to the northern part of the city. Now tennis players can play on 17 clay and 3 hard courts in Munich. Four courts with the slow surfaces for the winter time are closed by a special air-supporting construction that allows continuing training regardless of the weather. The central arena of the sports complex can accommodate 4300 spectators.

The 2023 BMW Open By American Express is the 107th edition of the tournament. It will take place from 17 to 23 April 2023.

ATP BMW Open Prize Money 2023

The Prize money purse at the BMW Open By American Express has increased for the 2023 tennis season. The total prize money came to –€562,815, up 5.29% from 2022. The champion in Munich will receive just over 15% of that total €85,605 if he wins the trophy. The runner-up will receive a small payout, pocketing €49,940 for his efforts. There is a significant drop off in prize money after the semi-final stage, with the two losing players in that round taking home €29,355 each. Those eliminated in the quarter-finals will receive €17,010 for their efforts. First-round losers will walk away with €6,035.

ATP BMW Open Entry List Will Be Headed By Holger Rune

The event will feature the participation of notable figures of German tennis such as Alexander Zverev, Jan-Lennard Struff, Daniel Altmaier, Yannick Hanfmann and others.

In singles, the trophy will be contested by 32 athletes, while 16 will take part in the doubles event. The top seeds are the Dane Holger Rune and American Taylor Fritz.

The last event in 2022 was won by Holger Rune, beating  Botic van de Zandschulp in the final. Danish tennis player Holger Rune will defend his title this year.

ATP BMW Open By American Express: History Of The Competition

The history of the ATP BMW Open by American Express dates back to 1900, when the first international competitions were held at the Munchner Tennis- und Turnierclub, which had opened eight years prior as the first tennis club in the city with only grass courts.

Professional players began competing in Munich in 1946, and the championship became “open” in 1970, welcoming both amateurs and professionals. With the formation of the ATP, the tournament joined the ATP World Series and currently holds the ATP 250 category in Germany with a relatively low prize fund.
