Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships: History Of The Competition

Tennis players first came to the ATP Dubai in 1993. In the early 1990s, the organizers of the local competition bought the license from Brazil’s Maceio. The tournament received the most modest ATP category (now ATP 250) and a good place in the calendar – after the Australian Open, but before Indian Wells. Despite the reshuffling of the tour, the competition has consistently been held in February. The 2021 season was an exception, as the cancellation of the California Masters and the postponement of the Australian Open meant the ATP Dubai essentially took the place of the American tournament.

In 2001, the Association of Tennis Professionals upgraded the Dubai championship to the ATP 500. Since then, the organizers have been inviting world tennis leaders to the tournament on a regular basis. Individual contracts are signed with some of them, where certain obligations are written down: for example, master classes and autograph sessions. ATP Dubai is considered one of the richest among the ATP 500 tournaments.

At the same time, Dubai Duty-Free was able to sign a contract for the championship of the second category among women. In 2009, after reforms in the tour, it received a more prestigious Premier 5 status.

In 2014, the organizers of the tournaments in Dubai and Doha agreed that in a year they would exchange the status of the competition. One season, Dubai hosts the Premier 5, and the next season the Premier category. Now they are the WTA 1000 and WTA 500, respectively.
