New rising star of Ukrainian Tennis and currently the second-best ranked Ukrainian girl on the WTA list is twenty years old Marta Kostyuk.
Marta Kostyuk was born on 28th June 2002 in Kyiv, Ukraine in a family of Oleh Kostyuk and Talina Beiko. Both her parents were involved in tennis, so in a way it was natural for her to follow in their footsteps. Her father was the technical director of the Antey Cup, a junior tennis tournament in Kyiv and her mother was a professional tennis player who played mostly on ITF Circuit and represented the Ukrainian tennis team.
She has two younger sisters, one of them, Maryia, is also a tennis player. Marta started playing tennis at age of five at the Antey Tennis Club, coached by her mother.
“My mom was always working a lot as a coach and the first time I went to the courts, I understand that if I start to train, I would get to spend more time with her. That is how all began.” said Marta in an interview.
She was playing junior tournaments with significant success and then since season 2017 turned pro. Her favorite surface for playing tennis is hard court and her favorite tennis player is Novak Djokovic.
Who is Marta Kostyuk’s coach?
Talina Beiko
Marta’s coach and main culprit she is playing tennis is her mother Talina Beiko.
Talina Beiko was born on 31st August 1970 in Ukraine. She was playing professional tennis for five years, since 1991, but without any significant results. She won three ITF Circuit titles in total and after retirement in 1996, she started her coaching career.
Talina coached at the local Antey Tennis Club, mostly working with young talents. Talina is responsible for her daughter tennis development and accompanies her at every tournament.
Under her mentorship Kostyuk as thirteen years old girl managed to win both Florida U14 tournaments in a row, prestigious Eddie Herr and Orange Bowl. Next year she won the Les Petits As in Tarbes, France, an unofficial world championship among players aged 12-14, thus joining the group of tennis players such as Martina Hingis, Dinara Safina, Kim Klisters.
Season 2017 started in a best way, by winning the Junior Australian Open. Later she won her second junior Grand Slam, US Open, this time in doubles playing alongside Olga Danilovic. That year Marta won an ITF tournament in Dunakeszi, becoming the youngest Ukrainian to win a pro singles title.
At 2018 Australian Open she made her Grand Slam debut and reached the third round. She became the youngest player to win a main-draw match in Melbourne since Martina Hingis in 1996. Her good form from Australia Open, she confirmed the next month, by winning Burnie International, an ITF Circuit tournament.
Next two seasons Marta won three ITF tournaments, two of which playing in doubles. In season 2021 she made her best result at Grand Slams, playing Rolland Garros fourth round. That led her into top 50 players on the WTA rankings for the first time. Last year she went step further, managed to win her first Challenger as well as first WTA title, playing in doubles.
She began this season with great result, playing Australian Open semi-final and after that reaching her career-best ranking in doubles of World no.31. This week she was defeated in the quarterfinals of Hua Hin tournament in Thailand.
Former Marta Kostyuk’s coaches
Ivan Ljubicic
Since Marta’s manager is former World no.3 Ivan Ljubicic, for a period of eleven months her coach was Croatian, Luka Kutanjac.
Luka Kutanjac was born on 29th March 1979 in Zagreb, Croatia. He earned his Bachelor-Tennis Coach at Coach Education Study Center Faculty of Kinesiology in Zagreb. Since 2015 he is part of Sporting Management Monaco owned by Ivan Ljubicic.
He also worked at International Tennis Academy in Delray Beach, USA, was coach in private academy in Beijing, China and was traveling coach for Croatian Tennis Federation, boys under 18.
While working with Marta, he led her to the title at Burnie International, but then followed bad results and after ten months collaboration they split.
“I’m the kind of person, I’m so kind, even if we have so many problems, I’m going to wait until the end and everything will be completely bad so then I’m like ‘okay, we have to split’ and then I feel so bad, for weeks. It was the first time I’ve split with a coach and it was very tough.” said Marta.
Dmytro Brichek
Then, as her tennis coach she hired another compatriot, Dmytro Brichek.
Dmytro Brichek was born on 10th April 1987 in Ukraine. He was playing tennis mostly at junior level and then switched to coaching. Before Marta, since 2010 for two years he was Alexandr Dolgopolov’s hitting partner and then for six years was Lesia Tsurenkos’ coach.
He worked with Marta for one and a half year in which she managed to win one title at Chiasso Open playing in doubles.
Although her mother Talina is always by her side, one of the coaches that help her in her junior days and contributed a lot to her results is Oleg Igorevich Krivosheev.
Oleg Krivosheev
Oleg Krivosheev is Ukrainian tennis coach that lives near Fastov, Ukraine. As a tennis player he didn’t compete at professional level, but as coach he did a great job guiding Marta. Alongside her mother he coached Kostyuk to the titles at two prestigious USA junior tournaments. He was also the part of the team when Marta won her first ITF tournament in Hungary.
Marta Kostyuk often trains at Piatti Tennis Academy and also she did some practice at Mouratouglou Academy.
