It is no secret that tennis is a wealthy person’s sport. The prestigious tournaments are usually only attended by the elite, both in terms of skill and background. However, this does not mean that progress isn’t being made in terms of equality. Recently, the National Bank Open announced that they would be increasing the prize money for the women’s side of the tournament by 46.95% to $2,697,250. This may seem like a small amount, but it is a significant step in the right direction. The WTA champion will pick up a cheque for $439,700, almost double compared to 2021.

Additionally, the prize money for the early rounds has been increased. This is important because it shows that progress is being made in terms of equality, and it gives hope for the future of the sport.
