The Silicon Valley Classic is always one of the most hotly contested tournaments on the tour, and this year is sure to be no different. Some of the biggest names in tennis will be taking part, and they will all be vying for a spot in the final. Whoever wins the tournament will have to overcome some stiff competition to do so. This is sure to be a great event for all tennis fans to enjoy.

WTA 500 San Jose History

The tennis players first came to California in 1971. Until the 1977 season inclusive, the tournament was held in San Francisco; from 1979 to 1996 it was held in Oakland (not to be confused with the city of the same name on the tennis calendar, which is in New Zealand). There have only been two short breaks in the history of the California championships. In 1978, the event did not take place for financial reasons. In 2020, the WTA San Jose, like many other championships, was not spared by the coronavirus pandemic. In the 2020 season, the American series was held in a truncated format. All of the women’s events, with the exception of the Lexington tournament, were held in New York City.

The WTA San Jose is one of the most stable tournaments on the tour in terms of sponsorships:

  • In the early days, the Virginia Slims tobacco company was the event’s main partner.
  • In 1992, Bank of the West took the tournament under its wing. In 1997, at his initiative the base of the competition changed. They began to be held at Stanford University.
  • In 2018, the tournament moved to San Jose, where it found a new sponsor – the investment company Mubadala, which operates in 50 countries (two offices – in the United States). Now the competition is called the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic.
