Swedish Open History

The Swedish Championships have been held since 1948. When the ATP became the main organization in men’s tennis in 1990, the tournament was given a basic category (now – 250). From 2009 to 2017 the tournament was unified: women also came to Bastad. In the 2018 season, the license for it was bought by the company of Moscow manager Alexander Ostrovsky, who decided to hold the event in Moscow. Nevertheless, in 2019 the tennis players still came to Sweden. True, for the WTA 125 championship.

ATP Bastad can be considered one of the most prestigious events ATP 250. From 2002 to 2012, it was recognized as the best in the designated category. During the time the tournament had different names:

  • Until 1999 inclusive, the championship was called the Investor Swedish Open. It received this name thanks to the support of Investor AB, a Swedish group which owns a controlling stake in several large companies.
  • In the 2000 season, tennis players came to the Wideyes Swedish Open. Wideyes is a famous fashion company.
  • In 2001 and 2002 ATP Bastad again changed its name to Telenordia Swedish Open in honor of the Swedish telephone company.
  • From 2003 to 2006 the championship was sponsored by Synsam.
  • From 2007 to 2009 the players attended the Catella Swedish Open in honor of a large financial company.
  • Since 2010, the tournament was called the SkiStar Swedish Open. SkiStar AB is a local recreation, tourism, real estate and retail company listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange.
  • Since the 2019 season, the main sponsor of the event is Nordea Bank Abp, a well-known European financial group.

Båstad Tennis Stadium was founded by Ludwig Nobel, Alfred Nobel’s nephew. The first tennis court was built in 1907 where the center court is today. The arena went through a big rebuild 2001 to 2007, and it is now a stunning tennis venue. It is truly a destination worth visiting.

The Båstad Tennis Stadium is one of the largest outdoor tennis arenas in the Nordic region. It has a capacity of 4300 seats at the Center Court, plus 1500 seats at Court 1.
